Known best for his flamboyant ready-to-wear designs—think studs, prints, chain mail—iconic Italian designer Gianni Versace quickly rose as the face of ’80s and ’90s fashion. In addition to setting the mood and trends for decades, he also played an integral role in the rise of the supermodel, often favoring catwalkers such as Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, and Cindy Crawford for his runway shows and campaigns.

More than just Gianni’s younger sister, Donatella Versace took over the design reigns at Versace following her brother’s death. With her bleached blonde hair and full lips, she’s become an industry icon in her own right.

An Italian model and Gianni Versace’s partner for 15 years, Antonio D’Amico was at home with the designer on the morning of his death. After Versace left the Miami Beach mansion to buy some magazines down the street, D’Amico heard gunshots and found the body on the steps outside. (He has called his television portrayal “ridiculous.”)

Just 27-years-old at the time, Andrew Cunanan gunned down Gianni Versace outside his Miami Beach mansion on July 15, 1997. Cunanan also killed at least four other people beforehand in a cross-country spree that landed him on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. He committed suicide on a Miami houseboat nine days after he murdered Versace.

Lee Miglin, a real estate tycoon and Chicago businessman, is believed to have been Andrew Cunanan’s third victim. Cunanan was known to research and prowl for potential sugar daddies.
