Gwyneth Paltrow Cochaired a Black-Tie Poker Party for amfAR at the Getty Mansion in San Francisco

Ann and Gordon Getty’s mansion, perched atop San Francisco’s regal Pacific Heights, has been the setting of countless fundraisers and soirées for almost 50 years. The family has hosted U.S. presidents, royalty, and some of the world’s most notable cultural figures. But of all the parties the home has seen, perhaps one of its most glamorous just took place on Friday night.

The occasion was amfAR’s Charity Poker Tournament Game Night, a black-tie gala that Gwyneth Paltrow (in town for the opening of Goop’s permanent store on Fillmore Street), Alan Cumming, and Jon Hamm chaired with members of the Getty family (Aileen, Vanessa, and Billy), to support the organization’s efforts at ending the global AIDS epidemic.

Blackjack and roulette tables were stationed throughout the house, famous for its exquisite 18th-century decor and paintings by some folks named Matisse, Degas, and Renoir. Set up in the larger rooms was the evening’s main attraction: a poker tournament where guests competed against professional players like Jeff Gross. Some, like actor Jon Hamm, didn’t do so well.

“I lost at poker. It sucked,” joked Hamm, after his abysmal performance at the card table. “I had a pair of twos, and everyone else didn’t.”

For those not bit by the gambling bug, other activities included astrological consultations by Susan Miller, portrait sittings by Drew Altizer, fashion illustrations by Mokshini, and music by DJ Dojah, all enjoyed with Perrier-Jouët Champagne and signature Absolut Elyx vodka cocktails.

“What an amazing party to have all of these different things going on,” remarked Rosetta Getty, who had just flown in for the event with husband, Balthazar. “It makes it such a fun night, something different than your average gala.”

Among the 200 guests attending were performers Victoria Justice and Jimmy Demers, Olympic champion Greg Louganis, model Charlotte McKinney, event producer Bronson van Wyck, interior designer Estee Stanley, Queen Meryl author Erin Carlson, and San Francisco’s amfAR supporters such as Shauna and Mike Harden, Michael Schwab, Bita Daryabari, Allison Speer, Lindsay Bolton, Jessica and Jason Moment, Holly and Karl Peterson, Carol Bonnie, Vandy Boudreau, Victoire Reynal Brown, and Stanlee Gatti.

Some younger members of the Getty family also appeared, like 24-year-old Ivy. “It’s awesome,” she said when asked what it’s like to attend a black-tie gala in her childhood home. “I’m really a last-minute person with everything, so this being in my home really helps.” Even after rushing to find someone to do her hair and makeup, she was stunning in a silver Vivienne Westwood gown.

Vanessa Getty was proud that her 18-year-old son Nicholas (who, she assures us, did not play poker), joined her at the fundraiser. “One of the most important things in how I raise my kids is that there’s a culture of giving back and taking care of each other,” she said. “It’s really a driving force for me, for our family, to do good in the world.” With 38 million people in the world living with HIV, it’s help that’s certainly needed.
