Dover Street Market Teams With When We All Vote on Election Initiatives

“We need drastic change in America, and I want to do as much as I can with my voice to help stop the dismantling of democracy and a culture of hate and divisiveness that has been inflicted upon us,” says Honey Dijon. The DJ and designer of Honey Fucking Dijon is one of more than a dozen citizens who are working with Dover Street Market on new initiatives around voting, in collaboration with Michelle Obama’s organization When We All Vote. Dijon’s tee, available for sale now, is one facet of the project. With rainbow-hued graphics and a prominent call to action, Dijon says the hope is that the garment conveys “that it’s not just about our individual concerns but for all of humanity. All of these perceived differences and belief systems can’t hide the fact that we all share the planet, and we must do all that we can to ensure that future life can also survive and thrive. It’s not about you, it’s not about me, it’s about us.”
Other collaborators range from Vaquera to Hood by Air and Goodfight, as well as Bravado artists Selena Gomez and the Beastie Boys, each of whom has created a product for sale through Dover Street Market. “We wanted to make something that was exciting and cute to wear but also useful and informative,” the Vaquera designers Patric DiCaprio, Bryn Taubensee, and Claire Sullivan told Vogue in a statement. “Our shirt has all of the voter-registration deadlines per state, so by wearing the shirt, you are helping to spread this information.” Their version, with a clever checkmark graphic on the front, is a decidedly optimistic take on the upcoming election. Hood by Air’s contribution simply reads “Shitshow” on the back—the message being: Things are bad, but they can certainly get worse.
The people behind Goodfight wrote: “As a team of four first-generation Americans who are children of immigrants, the cause was incredibly personal for us. Our designer’s parents are Vietnam War refugees—his father came on a small boat and lost his brother in the process, while his mother was lucky enough to come on a U.S. Navy ship. All of our parents came to the U.S. to make a better life and sacrificed so much for us to enjoy the privileges of being an American—a story ‘as American as apple pie.’ Our right to vote is not only a huge part of what they worked so hard for but also how we can actively steward our lives and future, so we immediately jumped at the opportunity when Dover Street Market reached out.”
The items are showcased through an imaginative campaign created by Ronnie Cooke Newhouse, who asked each brand to contribute an artful photo of its product. “It is a unique honor and source of great joy to be part of this project and so moving to see our community and friends rally so passionately around the deeply urgent matter of voting,” said Adrian Joffe, the president of Dover Street Market, in a statement. “We thank all of them for working tirelessly to see this project to fruition, and we also thank the When We All Vote team, Meredith Koop, Sarween Salih, and Good Service for their partnership and ceaseless commitment to preserving the most important of civil liberties.”
