We purchased this antique candelabra from a local Frenchman who sells old wares from his barn in a nearby village. This originally came from another château. For now it lights the way at night. Walking at night in candlelight makes enormous silhouettes on the walls. In the corner are original terra-cotta tiles we are slowly cleaning to be reinstalled in one of the bedrooms. Only thousands more to go!

One of the bedrooms we simply and practically created for summer: two French beds, one chair, and candlelight.

I found these chairs at a brocante in the 13th-century monastery village of Fanjeaux, about an hour’s drive away. The dark timber chair is original 18th-century Louis XIV.

My room. It awaits the reinstallation of the original terra-cotta flooring and some limewash.

Summer beginning to give up its turn for the next season. The weather has changed. The nights are now longer.
