I Miss Joan Rivers—and Her Glamorous Style—on the Oscars Red Carpet

As I reminisce on Rivers, however, what I’m most nostalgic for above all is her own glamorous style. It was tradition for Rivers to walk the red carpet before beginning her hosting duties, and she always brought an elegant evening look to the occasion. Over the years, she wore everything from sequined and beaded gowns, to Old Hollywood feather stoles and fur-trimmed robe coats. Sure, her fashion commentary about fellow celebrities could be snarky and biting, but Rivers walked the walk. You can’t deny she had exquisite taste, and she backed up her status as a fashion authority, given she was versed in trends and the industry landscape, and always dressed to the nines as well.

Years later, the Oscars are simply not the same without her. I wonder what Rivers would think of the fashion climate today. In a way, not much has changed; red carpet fashion is still critiqued and discussed at length. But there’s been a bit of magic lost in terms of dissecting and analyzing looks in real time. Today’s hosts are, frankly, afraid to say anything bad at all on network TV. Joan would surely hate the niceness of it all—and whether you were a fan or not, she at least had a point-of-view.

Below, a look back at Joan Rivers’s at Oscars.
