The spring 2020 runways were blooming with tropical greenery. From the lush green floral patterns and head sculptures at Marni to the island-blossom and frond motifs at Dries Van Noten, so many designers seemed to be fixated on Mother Earth’s hot-weather flora. But among all of the tropical-themed clothes presented for the upcoming season, there was one single item that radiated more heat than anything else: the jungle dress. Jennifer Lopez closed the Versace show wearing it, and jaws dropped. Donatella updated the original version, which J. Lo donned to the 2000 Grammys, and 20 years later the Hustlers star wore it painfully well. In a nutshell, the jungle dress 2.0 ended the vibrant tropical-print spring trend with a bang. So will J. Lo wear it again? It’s a question that’s been floating around the industry since her major runway moment.
This Sunday, J. Lo will perform at the Super Bowl halftime show in Miami, and one has to wonder whether she’ll break out the Versace jungle dress, or another version of it, to take center field.
