LE SSERAFIM Perfected Girl Group Style at Coachella

Despite becoming a group just two years ago, LE SSERAFIM is already achieving major career highs—including playing a winning set at the annual Coachella music festival this past weekend. The K-pop group brought their signature choreography—and coordinated girl group style!—to the stage, a dream come true for its five members Kim Chaewon, Kazuha, Hong Eunchae, Huh Yunjin, and Sakura. “Performing at Coachella had always been on our bucket list, but we never imagined it would happen this early on in our career,” Chaewon tells Vogue, while co-member Yunjin adds, “We were in disbelief. Growing up in the States, I had only seen Coachella from afar online, so being able to attend in itself, let alone as a performer, feels like a dream come true. We were so excited, but also so nervous!”
Of course, there was a lot of preparations that went into the group’s Coachella set, during which they performed hits “Antifragile” and “Smart.” And LE SSERAFIM had tons of new material to work with; The group released their latest album, Easy, earlier this year, and they started prepping for Coachella immediately afterwards. “Since Coachella is a festival for music lovers from all around the world, we wanted to create a show that’s even more fun and enjoyable, for everyone there and for ourselves,” says Sakura. “We also wanted to focus on leaving a lasting impression on not only our fans, but also people in the audience who are watching us perform for the first time.”
Ever wonder what goes into choosing a set list for a bit Coachella performance? For LE SSERAFIM, it was all about selecting songs that would get the audience hyped. “We wanted to showcase our most representative songs,” says Yunjin. “So we start off strong with ‘Antifragile’ to show who we are as a team, and then at the end, we finished off strong with ‘Fire in the belly,’ a song we chose in hopes of really going out with a bang.” Of course, the accompanying choreography was just as important; The five members rehearsed for months to incorporate fresh and exciting new dance breaks, with each member bringing their own unique flavor to the mix. “I do my best to express through choreography the message of our songs, in an effort to immerse our audience further into our performances,” says Eunchae. Kazuha adds that it was important for the group to push and challenge themselves. “I never want to remain too satisfied, but rather strive to always become a better version of myself,” she says.
For the group’s stage looks, meanwhile, LE SSERAFIM naturally had to deliver an epic coordinated fashion moment. The five members were dressed in custom looks designed by Louis Vuitton’s Nicolas Ghesquière, including pieces such as boxy leather moto jackets, glitzy Damier-print tops, and mini skirts. “I think the outfits are a perfect representation of Louis Vuitton’s chic sophistication and LE SSERAFIM’s charisma,” says Sakura. For Eunchae, her favorite aspects of the statement looks were the sparkly (and superstar-worthy) details. “I personally liked the shiny sequin details since it’s not something I wear very often, and anticipate it will catch the light really well while we’re on stage,” she says.
When it comes to dressing for their performances, the group says that finding striking looks that reflects their music is always the priority. “Our performances are known to be physically demanding with a lot of movement, so I think comfort, as well as how well it fits the mood of the specific track, are top priorities to consider for our stage attire,” says Eunchae. Kazuha adds, “Our stage attire is an effective visual tool to represent who we are as artists, so we put a lot of effort into putting together outfits that reflect the tone and message of our albums and music.”
As for what’s next for the group, now that LE SSERAFIM dominated the Coachella stage? They’ve still got weekend two next week—but after that, they re eying a well-deserved indulgence before building their pop group CV. “First things first, [we] plan to celebrate with plenty of delicious food,” says Chaewon. “We’re really excited and eager to continue this momentum with our upcoming fan meets and new music, so we hope our fans can look forward to it as well” They add that Coachella, though major, is just the beginning. “Coachella is already a huge stage on its own,” says Kazuha, “but we want to dream even bigger.”
