Susie Lau’s Decade in Street Style
Of all the people our street-style photographer Phil Oh has shot through the decade, Susie Lau may be his favorite subject. Almost every one of his couture and ready-to-wear slideshows includes a few photos of her, going all the way back to 2012. That feels like ancient history at this point, but Lau’s blog, Style Bubble, was already six years old by then. She was one of the first bloggers to attend fashion week, back when street style was still a relatively new phenomenon and focused mainly on editors, buyers, and models. Industry types didn’t warm to the blogger crowd right away, but it was a shift that changed fashion more than any of us could have anticipated.
While Lau has since become a contributor to several magazines, websites, and fashion houses, some of her blogger peers have dropped off; they either stopped blogging or simply got tired of fashion week. Revisiting her photos through the years is a reminder of why Lau has become such a force; her singular style is part of it, but it’s also her genuine enthusiasm for fashion. She’s a fan of clashing prints, unusual silhouettes, and sneakers with dresses—and she takes great joy in supporting indie designers like Molly Goddard, Simone Rocha, and Marine Serre.
Here, we’ve traced Lau’s style through the decade in 31 photos. Scroll through them all below for a final dose of inspiration before the new year—then come back in January to see Oh’s coverage of the fall 2020 menswear and spring 2019 couture shows.
