Timothée Chalamet, Sarah Jessica Parker, Uma Thurman, and More Attend the Broadway Opening of The Inheritance

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house on Sunday when The Inheritance opened on Broadway at the Ethel Barrymore Theater. Directed by Stephen Daldry, Matthew Lopez’s smash hit two-part play is a loose reimagining of E. M. Forster’s masterpiece 1910 novel Howards End and follows the interlinked lives of three generations of gay men living in 21st-century Manhattan as they search for their collective past and summon the gay pioneers who made their present lives possible. And who better to guide them on the staggering six-hour-long journey than Forster himself (brilliantly portrayed by the British actor Paul Hilton)? “I’m so proud of the work we have done and of these fearless, fearless actors,” Lopez said at the after-party, which went down at Tribeca 360. The panoramic views of Manhattan proved a perfect backdrop for the soirée, considering how the play is, in many ways, a love letter to New York City and its “shimmering” skyline.

The cast is just as fearless when it comes to their fashion sense, as each took a distinctly unique approach to opening night style, turning the step-and-repeat into their own personal runway. Not least of all Lopez, who made a sartorial splash in a sharp Alexander McQueen suit embroidered with trompe l’oeil florals as an homage to The Inheritance’s cherry tree theme. Andrew Burnap, who plays flamboyant playwright Toby, also hit a sleek note in his very first suit from Tom Ford: “I feel like a million bucks!” he said. While his costar, Arturo Luís Soria, drew inspiration from Billy Porter’s Christian Siriano suit-slash-skirt ensemble from the 2019 Oscars. Only his took the form of a vintage John Galliano maxi skirt juxtaposed with a Hugo Boss tuxedo jacket. “[Porter] gave us permission to be out there with our fashion, gender-bend, and not be ruled by one single constraint,” Soria said. “So tonight, I decided to live my truth and go all out.”

Others flexed their DIY skills in ensembles of their own creation. Take Carson McCalley, who sent cameras flashing in a leather motorcycle jacket splashed with Keith Haring–inspired graffiti—a touching tribute to the artist and gay rights activist who became victim to the devastating HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. Meanwhile, Kyle Soller, who plays diffident social activist, Eric Glass, struck a similar chord in a Haider Ackermann statement jacket in a pitch-perfect shade of red. The hue signifies life for the gay community and is also the universal symbol of awareness and support for people living with HIV. “In this cast, we have a lot of personalities that don t actually clash with one another and it allows everyone to be who they truly are,” Soller said. “They’re all showing that tonight [with their style], which is really fun.”

After filling up on sliders and miniature doughnuts, everyone continued to serve looks on the dance floor, getting down to tracks by Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, and Ariana Grande. When Dirty Dancing anthem “The Time of My Life” blared across the speakers, two revelers sprung into the famous lift from the film, cuing snaps and cheers from the crowd all around.
