Timothée Chalamet and Lily-Rose Depp Held Court at the New York Premiere of The King

All hail Hollywood’s newest It couple, Timothée Chalamet and Lily-Rose Depp! The duo made their second red-carpet debut in New York City for the premiere of Netflix’s The King, following their fashionable coupling at the Venice Film Festival. They were joined by costar Joel Edgerton and director David Michôd for the celebratory occasion at the SVA Theatre.

The King is a modern interpretation of William Shakespeare’s Henry V, in which a young King Henry V (played by Chalamet) ascends the throne and pursues his destiny to overtake France. Through plot twists and gripping battle scenes, we see the young king transform from pacifist adolescent to bellicose monarch under the guidance of his advisor (played by Edgerton), with the intention of defeating the French dauphin (played by Robert Pattinson). Edgerton is near unrecognizable in the film; after undergoing a bearded physical transformation, he displayed an impressive chameleonic performance. Viewers can expect thrilling spars of graphic combat, valiant soliloquies delivered by Chalamet and Depp (the French king’s daughter), infantry costumes, and gorgeous editorial cinematography.

The film premiere was raucous thanks to a crowd outside the theater of Chalamet superfans, who erupted into royal fanfare with each sighting of the actor. Chalamet, who wore a black Givenchy suit with a yellow turtleneck, told Vogue, “This was an amazing cast to work with. I feel sheepishly grateful to David and Joel….I felt everyone’s support.” Costar Depp wore a black Chanel dress with embroidered pink sequined roses. On the role of fashion in the film, the actress told Vogue, “Costume, hair, and makeup is always really important when getting into the character. Literally stepping into their shoes helps you get into their physicality and how they look and act.” The cast was joined by the likes of Patti Smith, Jon Hamm, and Kelly Rutherford for the film screening.

After the film premiere the cast and their guests retreated to downtown club the Box, where flowing drinks gave way to tabletop dancing with burlesque performers, aerialists, fire dancers, and a sword swallower. Spotted among the crowd were The Weeknd, Greta Gerwig, Alysia Reiner, and Timo Weiland. Just like their characters in the movie, Chalamet, Depp, and Edgerton were given the royal treatment.
