Feeling Restless? How to Get Dressed for Your Next Solitary Walk

Whether you’re self-isolating in the city or the suburbs, taking time out of the day to get a little fresh air (while still keeping a safe social distance) is important no matter your locale. You can take a solitary walk just about anywhere—from New York’s gridded streets to the beach towns out east. To avoid the effects of cabin fever, I myself am trying to take a few minutes outside each day, whether that’s having lunch on my stoop (if weather permits), going for a morning jog around the neighborhood, walking my dog, or catching the sunset on the roof.
It isn’t just the fresh air that might revive you, though—leaving the house is also a good excuse to get dressed beyond pajamas and to put on (gasp!) real shoes, even when you don’t have a destination in mind. Some of my friends and colleagues have gone days without leaving the house, and they’re left feeling stir-crazy. Going for a solo stroll will not only help ease the anxieties and restlessness of staying in one place for a long time, but it’s also a great opportunity to take a moment for yourself and step away from the WFH grind and the never-ending news cycle refreshing constantly across our phone.
There are plenty of outdoor-appropriate pieces that are casual yet cozy to inspire you to get off the couch. From low-top sneakers to minimal leather slippers, footwear you can walk in comfortably is key—those in colder climates might consider a Chelsea boot, while transitional-weather-area residents could try socks and sandals. A quilted jacket or knitted Henley are go-tos, while neutral knits or striped turtlenecks are great ways to layer with no additional thought required. For the bottoms, keep things easy with a pair of loose trousers or leggings and, if needed, a scarf to keep your nose and mouth covered.
With spring weather starting to arrive, there’s no better time to begin taking a daily solitary walk—and to enjoy a break from our screens, while supporting small brands and businesses along the way.
