There’s nothing quite like an intimate Italian dinner, especially when everyone is wearing gorgeous Zimmermann gowns and Don Angie’s acclaimed chefs are doing the cooking. So, when Nicky and Simone Zimmermann were planning their annual New York Fashion Week kick-off dinner party, the West Village mainstay was an obvious choice to gather those closest to the brand—especially in the wake of their homeland’s devastating summer season—and raise a glass in the name of friendship.
After a lingering cocktail hour during which everyone traded itineraries for the bustling week ahead, guests, including Katie Holmes, Karen Elson, Aurora James, Roopal Patel, Tabitha Simmons, Talita von Furstenberg, and Vogue’s Nicole Phelps, eventually settled into their seats for a meal that would be worth the wait.
A selection of Don Angie classics, like stuffed garlic flatbread, pink snapper crudo, chrysanthemum salad, and charred broccoli, were all served alongside cocktails and vino. Unsurprisingly, the crowd favorite was the restaurant’s famous spiral lasagna.
During a pause between clearing the first course and preparing for the main, Nicky took a moment to address the room. “Words cannot describe how much my sister and I appreciate your friendship over the years,” she began. “You all have been so incredible to our country and us personally in how you have promoted, supported, and in all the ways you have made people aware of what has happened back home.”
By the time the tiramisu arrived, guests were jumping from table to table to enjoy the company of everyone—especially Nicky and Simone’s before they dive into show planning over the next few days. (Zimmermann’s fall 2020 show is scheduled for Monday at noon.)
“It truly has been a horrible summer,” Nicky admitted. “But on a lighter note, your generosity and support mean so much to us, not just as a business, but as people.”
