At 28, Elizabeth Debicki is still a relative newcomer to Hollywood, though her impressive résumé speaks to a star twice her age. The Australian actress and April Vogue cover star broke into the mainstream with a supporting role in the film adaptation of The Great Gatsby in 2013. In the six years since, she has captivated audiences as part of an ensemble cast in the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy, and most recently stole the show in Steve McQueen’s all-female heist drama, Widows.
While carving out a place herself on the big screen, Debicki has also become an outspoken proponent of the #metoo movement, using her platform to open up the discussion around gender inequity and inclusivity in Hollywood. And she is just as forward-thinking and forthright when it comes to the act of getting dressed. The actress embraces her chameleonic fashion impulses with both hands, flaunting a classically feminine silhouette on the red carpet one moment, and then switching things up with a daring, androgynous look the next. The ensemble she wore to the Armani Privé show at Haute Couture Week in Paris earlier this year spoke to her penchant for mannish tailoring. Though in her hands, the two-piece suit was anything but drab, worn with nothing underneath and paired with cool black pumps and eye-catching, sculptural earrings. At the BAFTAs last month, the star flipped the script entirely, channeling old Hollywood glamour in a gold knee-length dress with black and gold accents.
Debicki proved that she’s just as chic in her downtime when she was spotted out on the street in New York late last fall. Dressed in a long floral-printed dress with tall boots in the perfect shade of auburn and the softest-looking camel coat, the actress was right in line with the cool, romantic mood we saw coming through on the runways for next season. Given the number of exciting projects she has coming down the pipeline—Debicki is currently in postproduction for Jordan Peele’s HBO show, Lovecraft Country, where she’ll star alongside Aunjanue Ellis and Jonathan Majors, and that’s just for starters—there will be plenty of opportunities for the rising Australian star to show she’s one step ahead of the rest.
