From Virgil Abloh to Jaden Smith, Here’s the Best Alternative Style at Coachella So Far

The hyper-specific genre of festival style that Coachella helped usher in when it began at the turn of the century seems staid by now. Just how many flower crowns, crop tops, and impossibly tiny jean shorts have you seen on Instagram already from the past three days? The festival’s artists, though, don’t play by those rules, naturally. Onstage, for example, Jaden Smith’s colorful patchwork outfit was somehow even more eye-catching than the fact that he performed on top off a Tesla that was suspended in the air.

Even when roaming the grounds, artists took festival garb in surprising new directions. From rapper Rico Nasty’s full-on mall goth outfit to Rosalía’s elevated take on the classic pink Juicy Couture sweatsuit (hers was Louis Vuitton) to Tierra Whack’s especially bold Kenzo, which was an archival reissue printed with photorealistic tomatoes, lots of artists brought surprisingly innovative taste to the Indio Valley this past weekend. Maybe all hope is not lost after all.
