This past Tuesday night, David Lynch, Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, and other cinema heavyweights came together at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City to honor Laura Dern. Chanel presented the annual fundraiser for the permanent collection’s film acquisitions, and the French house also dressed the surprise performer of the evening: Maggie Rogers.

Rogers has been on a covers kick as of late—just a few weeks ago, she joined Dead and Company onstage at Madison Square Garden to perform “Friend of the Devil” and “The Weight”—and she reached even further back into the American songbook with her MoMA performance. Along with Jon Batiste and Rogers’s guitar player, Elle Puckett, Rogers sang her own rendition of the George Gershwin–penned jazz standard “Someone to Watch Over Me.”

Rogers took to the MoMA benefit stage in a flouncy black belted Chanel number, naturally—see below for a behind-the-scenes look at her night, and look out for her surprisingly bookish red carpet accessory.

Nothing makes me happier than performing with my friend, the inimitable Jon Batiste. We worked up a special cover of “Someone to Watch Over Me" for the night.
