Last Week, Stars Went Against the Grain in Unexpected Designers and Retro Fashion

Coachella, Paris parties, and galas galore saw the world’s most stylish slipping into statement looks of a curiously non-boho stripe (no flower crowns, little denim!). Instead it was a week in which unexpected designer looks, vintage finds, and some rather glorious gowns ruled the carpet.
At the New York premiere of Hellboy Milla Jovovich revisited Claude Montana, a seminal ’80s Paris designer. She paired his shoulder-padded, acid-green ruched overcoat with a sassy leather dress from Isabel Marant. Talk about high-low! Equally appealing was her costar Sasha Lane’s Prada dress of brilliant sapphire with a lightning bolt for a bit of paranormal comic charm.
In Copenhagen Michelle Obama continued her chic world tour for her memoir, Becoming, in a pastel embroidered trouser suit by local favorite Stine Goya. Always directional and relevant, Obama has turned her speaking engagements abroad into smart showcases for global fashion.
