At This Year’s Oscars, Stars Turned the Red Carpet Green
Tonight’s Oscars red carpet certainly dished up the glitz and glamour that you’d expect to see at the awards ceremony. (See Vogue’s best-dressed Oscars list from the red carpet here.) But there was also a new spirit in the air this evening, one that saw Hollywood A-listers reject the tradition of having brand new gowns custom-made for them. Instead, select stars embraced a more eco-minded approach to fashion. They did so by opting to wear vintage dresses or gowns that had a sustainable or upcycled element to them.
The Oscars were not the only green-leaning awards this season. The BAFTAs instituted a dress code that encouraged stars to re-wear a look from a past carpet appearance. But during tonight s ceremony, some stars took the idea to bold new heights.

The Bombshell star, nominated for best supporting actress, wore a vintage Chanel dress from the label’s spring 1994 Haute Couture collection. Its navy silk and off-the-shoulder silhouette still felt fresh and current today.
Photo: Getty Images2/10Little Women’s Saoirse Ronan and Gucci got on board with the sustainable mindset this evening. The label used the same black fabric as her BAFTAs gown to create her Oscars dress tonight, which had a more dramatic, ruffled silhouette.
Photo: Getty Images3/10French actress Léa Seydoux wore a white floor-length gown by Louis Vuitton. Its organic silk faille was made from Tencel Luxe filament yarn, which is wood-based. (She also wore organic satin sandals.) Seydoux’s garment was made in collaboration with the Red Carpet Green Dress campaign, a women-led initiative devoted to environmental activism.
Photo: Getty Images4/10Kaitlyn Dever wore a red Louis Vuitton gown that was also made with a silk satin certified by Red Carpet Green Dress. Dever’s custom platform shoes, meanwhile, were made by Aldo, a certified climate-neutral brand. (It earned the title by recently offsetting 100% of its carbon emissions produced back in 2017.)
Photo: Getty Images5/10Costume designer Sandy Powell re-wore the white suit she wore to BAFTAs last week. The suit, signed by several Oscar nominees tonight, is being auctioned at an upcoming date to support a good cause. Powell is hoping to raise enough funds to purchase, preserve, and maintain the home of her late friend and mentor Derek Jarman, the English filmmaker and artist.
