You Don’t Have to Pick Sides With Fall’s Two-Tone Trend

Color-blocking has always been an eye-catching and creative way to style an outfit—and perhaps an even better way to catch a street style photographer’s eye. This season, however, color-blocking has mutated into a more unexpected new fall trend that is no longer simply about mixing and matching colors when putting together a look. We’re talking two different contrasting hues or fabrics on one single garment or accessory—from bicolored pant legs, boots dipped half-and-half in contrasting colors, and two-paneled blouses. It’s an easy way to add a dose of instant cool to any fall outfit, and an even easier way to get dressed for those days when you can’t decide which color sweater or dress to wear. Not to mention, it’s the perfect alternative for those who want to shake up their fall wardrobe without having to rely on classic and predictable fall prints like plaids and florals. As someone who steers clear of prints and loves solid colors, I personally couldn’t wait to try the trend during New York Fashion Week.

The divided look is popping up everywhere too, and the New York street style set were only the latest to jump on the trend. In Copenhagen this summer, one street style star wore two of the same shoes in different colors at the same time, and in Paris earlier this year, a button-down shirt was spotted slashed diagonally, combining both burgundy and optic white leather—the best of both worlds. Whether it’s bicolored, two-tone, night and day, or even Neapolitan (yes, we mean the ice cream!), you don’t have to pick sides when it comes to shopping this fall trend.
