Tracey Cunningham is the celebrity colorist behind many A-list hair transformations. Remember that time Kim Kardashian went blonde? That was Cunningham. She’s also responsible for Emma Stone’s more recent color swap from red to peroxide blonde, and then back to red again. Naturally, Cunningham also had a hand in many of the looks on the Golden Globes 2024 red carpet at the weekend–and will be tweaking the shade of some of the world’s best-known manes throughout the remainder of awards season.
Here, she shares the details behind three celebrity color transformations, all of them bang on trend for 2024.
Emma Stone
“Emma was blonde, I don’t know, about two or three weeks ago? She texted me the day after she did Saturday Night Live and said she wanted to go red. I used Redken’s Shades EQ [a professional hair gloss] on her, because when you’re platinum blonde you don’t need to lift the color, but gloss it. It took us a few times to get it right and I sent her gloss treatments to do at home to keep the hair color rich–I always provide my clients with their own color for home use. Emma didn’t want to go pale red, so we went for a darker red and, alongside Olaplex home treatments which she’s really good at doing, I am going to chelate [removing minerals and other product build-up] her hair and then gloss it for the Critics’ Choice Awards in a couple of weeks–it’ll make the red even more red.”
Riley Keough
“Riley went brunette while in Paris for the Chanel show, but we’ve recently just touched it up–I saw her just before the Globes. She’s liking her hair dark, so we’re just going to gloss it to add shine.”
Carey Mulligan
“I took Carey Mulligan very blonde–this winter has been all about blondes! Everyone has gone blonde. When someone wants to go blonde, it’s not like I can just put bleach all over their hair–I’ve got to go through the whole head, picking out every single dark bit, so it’s a long process and can be quite tedious. Blondes start off looking bright but quite quickly their hair can go dull, so I always recommend Olaplex’s 4C Clarifying Shampoo, which lifts the minerals and metals from the hair.”
