Forget 9-to-5. Mothering knows no schedule—and often it feels more like 5-to-9 and everything in between. In this series, we look at the hectic, messy, sometimes beautiful, often frustrating enterprise of being a mother—and maintaining a life of your own. Consider it a “day in the life” for the forgotten hours. Read previous installments, from Jemima Kirke, Hilaria Baldwin, Karine Jean-Pierre, and Hallie Jackson. Today we look at the schedule of DJ Vashtie Kola.
For the first time today in almost a year, I woke up before the family to get in some me time and to meditate. Shortly after, the kids woke up and happy chaos ensued. We make breakfast, talk about the day, and play kids music.
Getting a workout in with kids is a major challenge, but lately I have been hitting my goals to get up and workout at home for at least 30 minutes. My husband and I take turns watching the kids and working out. I heard a saying that has helped motivate me “it doesn’t need to be perfect, it needs to be done.”
7:30 a.m.
Ever since our toddler started school, our mornings are busy packing lunches, getting dressed, doing hair, etc. I also spend a lot of time putting away their clothes and cleaning up…the cleaning never ends! I try and play new music while I do this so I stay on top of my DJ game while maintaining the home.
I shower and get my makeup done by my artist Camille Thompson because I’m shooting content today. I also try and eat fresh fruit daily. I eat a ton of vegetables throughout the day, but I definitely need to add more fresh fruit. I made a habit tracker to help me stay on top!
I take a quick meeting with Mathilde Jaeger at Ruby’s to talk about my newest venture, “A Parently Kidding” which is a monthly family dance party for the coolest families around. Just imagine the hottest nightclub and make it during the day and all you need is a kid for entry! It’s my latest passion project and aims to bring parents community and culture, because we need to be socialized also!
We review the flyers for the party and make sure they are good to go! We are so excited to have iconic female DJ’s on the kickoff lineup, who also happen to be moms! I’m excited and anxious, the kickoff event is this Saturday.
I run back home to feed my little one and put her down for a nap. She’s about one and as much as I love breastfeeding, I do look forward to weaning her off very soon!
I change my look to shoot some content for Dior at home. I absolutely adore working with the brand and feel so honored whenever they have me as a part of their iconic house.
I run out to pick up my toddler from pre-k. It’s a highlight of my day just walking home and talking about her experience. She likes to run ahead and asks me to chase her, which is not my favorite—but I do it because she loves it!
I change my look for something more professional to take some Zoom meetings for the party. So much to organize with VIPs, sponsors, decorations, gift bags and more! I also respond to emails about upcoming DJ sets for Art Basel in Miami.
Checking out some of the swag our sponsors have sent. So excited to be working with Perelel and more. We want the parents to feel very loved with this goodies in their gift bags.
I make dinner for the family since I work from home. My toddler has a little TV time (no screens, just the big one on the wall! ha). With my toddler occupied, I make dinner while my one-year-old sits in a high chair snacking on food.
Evenings are always wild getting the kids to bed. Once they are asleep at 7, it’s major cleanup time. It’s a lot of work, but also the relieving part of the day.
Me and hubby usually have dinner with kids, but sometimes we decide to eat after, like tonight. I made a vegan pesto pasta which was super-quick to make.
We watch a fun and light series at the end of the night. I’ve learned that as much as I love true crime and other dark things, I know myself better at this age that it’s too stressful. We started watching Broad City and I love it! It’s lights out at 9:45 p.m.!
