Anne Hathaway, Nancy Meyers, and More Talk Internships at the Cinema Society s Screening of The Intern

The latest flick from Nancy Meyers draws out a distinguished, downtown crowd.

While the hard-core fashion set was busy migrating from London to Milan, it was business as usual in New York. With the New York Film Festival beginning this weekend, Nancy Meyers’s latest flick, The Intern, was shown at Soho’s Landmark Sunshine Cinema last night at an event hosted by the Cinema Society and Ruffino winery. Martha Stewart and designers Prabal Gurung, Gilles Mendel, and Wes Gordon, who accompanied the stunning Erica Reid, all grabbed their popcorn and took their seats—and then the movie’s star Anne Hathaway, writer-director Nancy Meyers, and supporting actor Andrew Rannells stole the show as they introduced the film.

Hathaway stepped out Monday night in an edgy, asymmetric Rodarte dress to kick off promotion of the film, and last night she brought out her polished bohemian side in a Valentino skirt with intricate beadwork. Has the Academy Award winner ever had an internship? “Not really,” she said with a laugh, adding, “When I was prepping for The Devil Wears Prada, I did a little internship at Christie’s, but it was more character research.” When pressed, Hathaway said she’d like to intern for a music label, and specifically for the band Arcade Fire. “I saw them in concert last year and they were just amazing,” exclaimed Hathaway. “They’re such a big band, I think they would be cool to get coffee for.” Costar Andrew Rannells shared that his first working experience was when he was in college: “It was here in New York at a talent agency that’s no longer with us. It was super depressing. I still sometimes see clients and think, I faxed your head shot.” And what about the woman behind the movie? While Meyers didn’t reveal whether or not she’d ever held an internship, she did say what she looks for in a candidate. “Has to be at least 65,” joked Meyers, playing off the premise of her film. “Just a great listener and a person that wants to be in the movie business.” Any requirements? “Smart and not a complainer.” During the movie, the audience was in stitches, laughing at the barbs being hurled back and forth between Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro’s characters. Afterward, guests including Anh Duong, Anne McNally, Sophie Sumner, and more headed to Soho hot boîte Chefs Club for a late bite and a nightcap. Call it the interns’ night out.
