It’s rare these days to get a sighting of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, the elusive designers of The Row, original boho style innovators, and Chanel darlings. But this week, the twins have both made public appearances—just on different coasts.
Mary-Kate was photographed at the U.S. Open on Wednesday night (September 3), taking place in New York. Sitting in the stands with a friend, she spectated Day 11 of the tense tennis tournament, but chose to swerve the usual styles of the crowd. Instead of tennis whites and preppy separates, or the looks enjoyed by fellow spectators like Katie Holmes and Em Rata, the designer opted for a paisley print kaftan over a white button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled up, accessorizing with a silver necklace, and chunky silver and gold rings. It was a relaxed look that proves the designer’s decades-long allegiance to the spirit of bohemian style.
Back on the west coast, Ashley Olsen joined her husband Louis Eisner and her acclaimed fashion photographer mother-in-law Lisa Eisner at the YES Scholars 25th Anniversary Gala, held at the Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles on September 4. The event always tends to be starry—Jennifer Lopez was also in attendance—and celebrates the work done by the Eisner’s organization to empower high-achieving students from low-income communities.
On the gala evening, Ashley opted for a simple oversized trench coat by The Row in dark beige, paired with black pointed pumps, gold earrings, and a brown bag also by The Row. Her sister Elizabeth Olsen was also in attendance, wearing a silky black dress with lacy details and exaggerated shoulders from Rodarte fall winter 2022.
As mentioned, it’s rare to see Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen out and about, but when it’s witnessed, it’s worth it. All the way back in February, Ashley Olsen gave a lesson in ultimate high-low dressing, pairing some Nike V2K Run Sneakers with the cult fave Margaux bag from The Row. The twins are a dab hand at off-beat pairings, though, whether that’s a sporty trainer and it-bag or a coat and flip-flop combo.
