A quick scroll of the Vogue homepage will show you how varied spring 2025’s shoe trends are–we have published stories about the Dad trainer coming for Sambas’s crown, sneaker-fied ballet pumps, the humble boat shoe, and Clarks Wallabees to name a few. Things are a little more varied than last year when we were in a ballerina flat vortex. However scrolling through the street-style imagery from fashion month so far and there is one clear footwear theme–whatever the shoe, it is more likely than not to be realised in brown. Look down at the feet flanking the front row and you’ll see a line of toffee, chocolate, coffee, tan and espresso-clad feet.

From Miu Miu boat shoes to Gucci Jordaan loafers, this color adds an heirloom, vintage-like quality to already classic designs, making it a more elegant choice than black leather or suede counterparts. This retro feeling is seen especially in the sneakers department, where suede brown runners have a nostalgic, ’70s charm. Dries van Noten’s Track sneakers capture this mood perfectly (but good luck trying to find a pair), while many of the re-released silhouettes du jour have been released in brown, from Adidas SL 72s to Nike Cortez trainers to Puma Speedcats. Like most trends, the rise in brown trainers can partly be traced back to Miuccia Prada, thanks to the cinnamon suede 530 running shoes from Miu Miu’s ongoing collaboration with New Balance that certainly tipped this style into It-sneaker territory in 2024.
