In Honor of National Selfie Day, the Best Celebrity Selfies of All Time

The world’s very first selfie, a blurry black-and-white daguerrotype, was presumably taken in 1839 by a man named Robert Cornelius. While people have been posing for this type of self-portraiture for over a century, it wasn’t until the arrival of smartphones (and the iPhone’s oh-so-convenient double-facing camera) that the phenomenon of the modern selfie really took off—which is all to say, we’ve come a long way, baby.

In fact, these days, a simple picture in front of a mirror will simply not do. There’s a real art to the selfie: One has to master that particular head tilt, figure out the most flattering amount of light, and pull it all off within an angle created at arm’s length—unless you have a selfie stick, which, let’s face it, is basically cheating. (We’re not above a good filter, though . . . ) Who better to show off the best ways to nail a selfie than our social media–skilled celebrities? In honor of National Selfie Day, we take a look at some of their best selfies of all time, including pics from Beyoncé, Kendall, Rihanna, and more than a few from our generation’s undisputed selfie queen, Kim Kardashian West.
