Peptides for Hair Growth

Of all the hair-growth agents, peptides seem to be the running favorite of 2025. “Peptides can support hair growth by acting as signaling molecules that stimulate the hair-follicle cells,” explains board-certified dermatologist Dr. Noah Gratch, adding that certain peptides can promote collagen production and improve blood circulation around the follicle, which helps create a healthier environment for hair growth. “While evidence is still limited, some studies suggest they can lengthen the growth phase of the hair cycle and improve hair density. They are often used as supportive ingredients rather than stand-alone treatments.”

Better Not Younger

Superpower+ Advanced Densifying Serum

  • Why We Love It: Powered by not only peptides, but biotin, rosemary extract, and apple cider vinegar, as well, Better Not Younger’s serum is a well-rounded hair-growth solution. As board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Babak Azizzadeh previously explained, Procapil, a patented ingredient that combines apigenin, oleanolic acid, and a high concentration of the biomimetic peptide biotinoyl tripeptide-1, is the lead ingredient, which “enhances the appearance of hair thickness by strengthening hair follicles and reducing signs of thinning.” Formulated as a lightweight gel, this will not weigh fine hair types down—trust us.
  • Key Ingredients: Procapil, niacinamide, biotin, rosemary extract, apple cider vinegar
  • Type: Serum
  • Size: 2 fl. oz.
  • How to Use: According to Better Not Younger, massage the serum onto the scalp for two to three minutes once daily.

Omi Hair Growth Peptides

OMI WellBeauty

Women s Hair Growth Peptides

  • Why We Love It: For those interested in going the hair-growth supplement route, consider this option from Omi. The brand’s clinical saw reduced hair loss by up to 47% in 90 days and 18% stronger hair, too, doing so by improving hair-follicle health and reducing breakage via peptides, biotin, and B vitamins. Non-GMO and free of fillers, the supplement brings results in three months.
  • Key Ingredients: Peptides, biotin, B vitamins
  • Type: Capsule
  • Size: 60 capsules
  • How to Use: According to Omi, take two capsules per day.

Minoxidil for Hair Growth

According to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Candace Spann, minoxidil is the only topical drug approved by the FDA for hair growth. “It is thought to help keep hair in the growing phase, also known as anagen,” dermatologist Dr. Brendan Camp explains. Minoxidil, which works by improving blood flow to the scalp, can be taken orally or applied topically.

Rogaine 5% Minoxidil Foam Hair Regrowth Treatment

Rogaine

5% Minoxidil Foam Hair Regrowth Treatment

  • Why We Love It: Trichologist Helen Reavey recommends minoxidil to combat hair loss associated with menopause and male or female pattern baldness. “This type of hair loss is caused by DHT, an androgen enzyme that is secreted from the hair follicle and causes the hair growth cycle to shorten. Minoxidil helps to block DHT from being secreted, helping to maintain a healthier growth cycle,” Reavey says. Rogaine is one of the most popular over-the-counter products powered by minoxidil—not to mention approved by the FDA. Featuring a high concentration of minoxidil, this Rogaine foam easily integrates into your hair-care regimen. Grab this set, which delivers a four-month supply, or try the brand’s top-rated minoxidil serum, which is just as convenient to apply.
  • Key Ingredients: Minoxidil 5%
  • Type: Foam
  • Size: 11 fl. oz. (Two bottles)
  • How to Use:

Hers Minoxidil Solution

Hers

Minoxidil Solution

  • Why We Love It: Those who enjoy the simplicity and ease of a hair serum will like Hers’s Minoxidil Solution. Here, the brand blends 2% minoxidil into a lightweight serum applied seamlessly to the scalp with a dropper. The formulation also makes it convenient to use day and night, sinking into the scalp quickly without disturbing your chosen style or weighing hair down.
  • Key Ingredients: Minoxidil 2%
  • Type: Serum
  • Size: 2 fl. oz. (Two bottles)
  • How to Use: According to Hers, apply 1 ml directly to the areas where you wish to see hair regrowth twice daily.

Rosemary Oil for Hair Growth

“Rosemary oil has been clinically proven to have effects similar to minoxidil (the only topical medication FDA-approved for hair growth),” Dr. Spann says. “It has demonstrated efficacy in helping to treat male or female pattern hair loss.” Dr. Camp says its efficacy lies in its ability to “fortify hair by improving moisture and strength [while] delivering nutrients and antioxidants, which protect hair-follicle cells from oxidative stress.”

Nécessaire Rosemary Serum
Image may contain: Bottle, Cosmetics, Perfume, and Aftershave

Nécessaire

Rosemary Serum

  • Why We Love It: “Rosemary extract has been studied for its ability to increase scalp circulation and possibly reduce inflammation around hair follicles,” Dr. Gratch says. “Some evidence suggests it may perform similarly to minoxidil in promoting hair growth when used consistently.” Powered by 70% rosemary water, oil, and extract, alongside Capixyl, this serum could be a great option for someone interested in a more natural approach rooted in optimizing overall scalp health.
  • Key Ingredients: Rosemary oil, rosemary water, rosemary extract, ceramides, 5% Capixyl
  • Type: Serum
  • Size: 30 ml / 1 fl. oz.
  • How to Use: According to Nécessaire, apply to the scalp and massage with your fingertips. This can be used on damp or dry hair.

Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Scalp Hair Strengthening Oil

Mielle Organics

Rosemary Mint Scalp Hair Strengthening Oil

  • Why We Love It: Mielle’s scalp and hair oil is known to promote stronger, healthier tresses through a powerhouse blend of rosemary, mint, and biotin. The trio, working in tandem with a blend of 30 essential oils and extracts, comes together to condition hair follicles, relieve dry scalp, smooth split ends, and enhance hair elasticity. Rosemary oil for hair growth is my elixir of choice; I find that when I apply it to my curly hair, I experience less breakage over time. Because I generally use this natural-ingredient elixir at night, my hair feels healthier come morning.
  • Key Ingredients: Rosemary oil, peppermint oil, biotin, castor oil, jojoba oil
  • Type: Oil
  • Size: 2 fl. oz.
  • How to use: According to Mielle, this can be applied to the scalp and combed from root to end. Otherwise, the oil works as a specialized scalp treatment or to provide nourishment during protective styling.

Caffeine for Hair Growth

“Caffeine-containing hair products may encourage hair growth by improving blood flow and circulation around the root of the follicle,” Dr. Camp says, explaining how it can help with delivering oxygen, vitamins, and nutrients that contribute to hair growth.

Chāmpo Pitta Growth Serum

Champo

Pitta Growth Serum

  • Why We Love It: Combining caffeine, creatine, peptides, and an Ayurvedic haritaki fruit into a weightless serum, Chāmpo’s Pitta Growth is a great growth solution for fine hair types. To put the formula to work, all you do is apply three to four drops onto the scalp and massage it in daily to alleviate everything from thinning hair to dry flakiness. Professional hairstylist Jennifer Korab has a penchant for it: “It’s designed to reduce shedding, boost circulation to the scalp, and support thicker, fuller-looking hair over time.”
  • Key Ingredients: Caffeine, creatine amino acid, peptides, haritaki fruit
  • Type: Serum
  • Size: 50 ml / 1.69 fl. oz.
  • How to Use: According to Chāmpo, apply three to four drops onto the fingertips and massage where needed.

Typology R13 Fortifying Treatment Shampoo

Typology

R13 - Fortifying Treatment Shampoo 1% Caffeine + Acety Tetrapeptide-3

  • Why We Love It: While it may not be a substitute for a prescribed hair-loss treatment, a fortifying shampoo like Typology’s sulfate- and silicone-free R13 provides worthwhile support, according to Dr. Gratch. “This shampoo is formulated to strengthen hair and reduce breakage, which can give the appearance of fuller, healthier hair,” he says, pointing to its use of 1% caffeine, peptides, and almond protein. “While shampoos generally have limited ability to stimulate true follicle growth, they can support scalp health by minimizing buildup and irritation. A fortified formula with active botanicals may help reduce shedding related to weak hair shafts.”
  • Key Ingredients: 1% caffeine, acetyl tetrapeptide-3, almond protein, lavender oil, rosemary oil
  • Type: Shampoo
  • Size: 6.76 fl. oz.
  • How to Use: According to Typology, apply a quarter-size amount, lather from root to ends, and massage into scalp. Rinse thoroughly before moving through your routine.

Biotin for Hair Growth

“Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, is thought to support the growth of hair, skin, and nails because it is involved in a variety of cellular functions and enzymatic reactions that help convert food into energy,” says Dr. Camp. This is one of those density-boosting ingredients you’re likely most familiar with, as it leads many of the industry’s most acclaimed vitamins for hair growth. Below, several options that contain biotin.

Nutrafol Women Hair Growth Supplement

Nutrafol

Women Hair Growth Supplement

  • Why We Love It: Dermatologist Dr. Nazanin Saedi says that those in search of a hair loss treatment as a result of a deficiency (such as vitamin D, iron, or zinc) can benefit from ingestible supplements. “Ingestibles may not work for everyone experiencing hair loss, but it can’t hurt,” she notes. This supplement by Nutrafol is one of her favorites. “[This] has vitamin E, which has been shown to help with hair loss and hair damage caused by oxidative stress, which is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in your body. An overload of free radicals is bad because it can cause damage to fatty tissue, DNA, and proteins in your body.”
  • Key Ingredients: Ashwagandha, saw palmetto, marine collagen peptides, curcumin, resveratrol, keratin, biotin
  • Type: Capsule
  • Size: 120 capsules
  • How to use: Nutrafol recommends taking four capsules once per day with a meal to see results in three to six months.

Vegamour Gro Biotin Gummies
Image may contain: Cylinder, Bottle, and Shaker

Vegamour Gro Biotin Gummies

  • Why We Love It: Gummy ingestibles are a no-fuss way to add a dietary supplement to your day. These have a tasty strawberry flavor and are packed with biotin, folic acid, and a slew of vitamins and minerals to support the body’s production of collagen and a healthy scalp.
  • Key Ingredients: Biotin; vitamins A, B5, B6, B12, C, E
  • Type: Gummies
  • Size: 30 gummy hair vitamins
  • How to use: “The most important thing is to stick with your regimen to receive the most optimal results,” says Vegamour founder and CEO Dan Hodgdon. “Whether you’re massaging a topical hair growth serum into your scalp every night or washing your biotin gummies down every morning, you have to be consistent.” Here, one gummy per day is all you need.

Viviscal Hair Growth Supplements

Viviscal

Hair Growth Supplements - 1 Month Supply

  • Why We Love It: “Viviscal supplements can promote hair growth by increasing circulating levels of nutrients that support hair growth and hair strength,” notes dermatologist Dr. Blair Murphy-Rose. “There is data to suggest that Viviscal may enhance the proliferation of dermal papillae cells, critical to the hair-growth cycle—specifically, supporting the anagen or growth phase.” She continues that because nutrient deficiencies can contribute to hair loss, Viviscal’s formulation, featuring hair-health nutrients like vitamins, protein, and fatty acids, could prove beneficial. Murphy-Rose does, however, emphasize consulting with your physician before taking these supplements, particularly because this formula features shark-derived collagen.
  • Key Ingredients: Marine collagen (derived from shark), iron, zinc, biotin, vitamin C, niacin, calcium, silica, horsetail extract
  • Type: Tablet
  • Size: 60 tablets
  • How to use: One tablet twice daily (after a meal) for three to six months.

ReTress Hair Rejuvenation Kit
Image may contain: Cosmetics, Bottle, and Deodorant

ReTress

Hair Rejuvenation Kit

  • Why We Love It: In Dr. Spann’s experience, biotin can help stimulate hair growth when taken orally or applied topically. So it’s no surprise she turned to it for her brand, ReTress, which she says “uses a biotin tripeptide as one of its main active ingredients to help improve blood flow to the follicles, therefore reducing shedding and helping stimulate hair growth.” This kit features all you need to get the full experience.
  • Key Ingredients: Biotin
  • Type: A shampoo, conditioner, serum, and tablet supplement
  • Size: Shampoo and Conditioner: 8.5 fl. oz., Serum: 1.4 fl. oz., Supplement: 30 tablets
  • How to Use: The shampoo and conditioner can be used on washday, while the serum and tablet supplements can be taken daily.

Redensyl for Hair Growth

According to Dr. Gratch, redensyl is a cosmetic ingredient that has gained attention for targeting hair-follicle stem cells and dermal papilla cells. “It is thought to help promote the anagen, or growth phase, of the hair cycle while reducing hair fall in the resting phase,” he says. “Clinical studies, though small and company-sponsored, show promising results in terms of hair density and reduced shedding. It can be a useful adjunct to proven treatments, but it is not as well-studied as FDA-approved options like minoxidil.” Korab agrees, adding that “studies suggest it can reduce shedding, improve density, and even promote new hair growth within a few months, making it a promising ingredient, although results can vary from person to person.”

The Ordinary Multi-Peptide Serum for Hair Density
Image may contain: Food, Seasoning, Syrup, Bottle, and Ketchup

Multi-Peptide Serum

  • Why We Love It: The Ordinary’s Multi-Peptide formula is one of my favorite hair serums because of how hydrating it is. Powered by not only caffeine and redensyl to boost hair density, but botanical extracts and a potent peptide blend that stimulates blood flow to the follicles and promotes stronger hair strands, the product gives the scalp precious T.L.C., helping any user achieve their hair goals. Best applied at night before bed, this serum boasts a slip, water-like texture that the scalp drinks up in a matter of seconds.
  • Key Ingredients: Caffeine, peptides, redensyl, procapil, Scutellaria baicalensis root extract, Centella asiatica leaf extract
  • Type: Serum
  • Size: 2 fl. oz. / 60 ml
  • How to Use: Massage onto a clean, dry scalp once daily.

Agent Nateur Holi (Growth) 84 Advanced Leave-In Growth Scalp Treatment

Agent Nateur

Holi (growth) 84 Advanced Leave-in Growth Scalp Spray

  • Why We Love It: “This treatment combines peptides, plant extracts, and other active ingredients to improve scalp health and potentially stimulate follicles,” Dr. Gratch says. “The inclusion of peptides may help with follicle signaling and strengthen the hair shaft over time. It may provide benefits in reducing shedding and improving hair texture, particularly if used consistently.”
  • Key Ingredients: Redensyl, Follicusan, spermidine, copper peptides, rosemary extract, astragalus
  • Type: Spray
  • Size: 120 ml / 4 oz.
  • How to Use: According to Agent Nateur, spritz directly onto the scalp and massage in.

What Causes Hair Loss and Hair Thinning

Let’s start at the beginning by discussing why someone might be experiencing hair loss, thinning hair, or slow hair growth in the first place, beginning with gender. “There has been a historic assumption that hair loss is a male concern, and this is reflected in the traditional solutions available,” says Hodgdon. It’s no surprise, then, that consumers are looking for products with a tailored approach to addressing female hair loss specifically. “Hair loss in women is incredibly common—over 80% of women will experience hair loss at some point in their lives, and over 40% of alopecia sufferers are women,” he adds.

“So many different factors can contribute to hair loss,” says Reavey, who lists age, stress levels, diet, illness, hormonal imbalances, or even product buildup as potential causes. She continues that distinguishing the cause of hair loss is key, as treatment methods can vary widely. Hodgdon notes that certain conditions like alopecia or telogen effluvium (temporary hair loss after a period of severe stress) can also have an impact.

“There are so many causes of hair thinning, and many with targeted treatments, that it is firstly essential to undergo a physical examination and discuss your history with a professional,” as your diagnosis will determine the most effective treatment option, says Murphy-Rose. In addition to hair growth products, she says, “there are other important ways to improve hair health. These include maintaining a well-balanced diet for adequate nutrition, getting sufficient sleep, and reducing stress.” So for best results you’ll likely want to explore lifestyle changes in addition to hair-growth treatments.

What Are Hair-Growth Products?

Hodgdon describes this category as “[products] that help promote and support a healthy hair-growth cycle”—essentially, stimulating the hair follicle. Our experts explain that most products look to address a single cause or symptom, which Hodgdon places into one of two categories: topical and ingestible treatments. The latter, Reavey says, has seen immense growth, with an aim of supporting hair health from within. These products could include items like our best shampoo for hair thinning or collagen supplements.

Do Hair-Growth Products Really Work?

According to Cann, there are many hair-growth products that actually work, so long as the hair follicle isn’t scarred (a medical term for cicatricial alopecia, a condition that destroys the hair follicle and is caused by inflammation or trauma.) “When treating hair loss, it is important to understand the root cause of hair loss when choosing a product or treatment,” she says. “Oftentimes, a multifaceted approach is required in order to optimize outcomes.”

Who Can Actually Benefit From Hair-Growth Products?

“Hair-growth products work best for those whose hair follicles have not been scarred,” says Cann. “The best results are achieved when hair loss is treated early.” Dr. Camp notes that those looking to maintain the strength and health of their hair can benefit most from hair-growth products, whereas those with active hair loss and shedding should consult with a board-certified dermatologist.

The Key Ingredients You Should Look for in Hair-Growth Products

Whether you’re looking to prevent or treat hair loss, it may be worth consulting with a trusted dermatologist or trichologist to determine the root cause and create a plan. Dr. Saedi recommends prostaglandin analogs to help promote growth or supplementing your diet with biotin.

Aside from prescription formulas, clean, plant-based actives are a great option, Hodgdon says, noting that these ingredients are at the heart of Vegamour’s lineup. “I recommend using products that ensure these actives are bioavailable (readily absorbed by the body) and included at effective levels,” he says. Of these, he specifically highlights turmeric, topical caffeine, red clover, mung bean extract, and CBD.

Reavey, on the other hand, suggests an approach based in the root of your hair loss. “If it is hair loss that is tied to environmental factors, like stress or poor diet, I would suggest products that include ingredients like peptides, caffeine, rosemary, ginger root, red leaf clover, and basil leaf,” she says, pointing to these ingredients’ antioxidant properties. Reavey also recommends apple stem cells, which can extend the growth phase of hair follicles. For hair loss as a result of menopause and female or male pattern baldness, she’d recommend incorporating minoxidil. As for supplements to fill any nutritional gaps in your diet, she “would suggest taking a supplement that includes biotin, zinc, selenium, and iron at the least, as these are all minerals necessary for growth.”

How Long Does It Take Hair-Growth Products to work?

Per Dr. Camp, scalp hair grows slowly, roughly one centimenter (or 0.4 inches) per month. “As a result, it is recommended to use a hair growth product for at least three to fourth months before deciding if it’s effective or not,” Dr. Camp says. Cann agrees, emphasizing that because hair grows in cycles, it will likely require continued, long-term use to maintain your results.

Why You Should Incorporate Hair-Growth Products

“Healthy, long, thick hair is the dream. As a dermatologist, I tell my patients that healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp,” says Dr. Saedi. “If you have dandruff, an itchy scalp, or scalp psoriasis, you need to start with addressing that first. If these conditions are chronic, talk to a dermatologist, who can help you get on the right path to healing your scalp.”

What’s more, Reavey emphasizes that even your styling choices can play a part in hair loss, especially in certain areas of your scalp. “A person may see their hairline becoming visibly thinner or that more of their scalp is becoming apparent through their parting,” she notes. “Other common indicators include your ponytail feeling less full or that you are shedding more hair than normal into your brush.”
