If your hair never seems to grow past that awkward in-between length, or if you’re dealing with the aftermath of a regretful impulse cut, chances are you’ve probably considered a hair-growth shampoo. But those aren’t the only reasons you might reach for one. Aging, postpartum shedding, menopause, stress, or even dietary changes can all affect how your hair grows, and sometimes it needs an extra boost.

To be clear, the best hair-growth shampoos are not miracle cures. Many experts are still divided on whether they can truly stop hair loss. What they can do is help maintain the healthiest possible environment for growth, supporting stronger strands and reducing breakage. Add to that the flood of rave reviews on social media and in product comment sections, and it’s no wonder these formulas keep ending up in carts.

Of course, results require consistency—and to cut through the noise, we asked dermatologists and hairstylists to share 15 hair- growth shampoos they actually recommend, chosen for their ingredients, formulations, and proven results.

Gratch notes that this formula is particularly well suited for those with oilier hair types, as it’s lightweight and effectively cleanses without weighing strands down. “It works to regulate oil production so that excess oil is removed and helps boost volume, so for flat hair this would be beneficial,” he explains. The formula includes phospholipids, pink pomelo, and alpha keratin (a healing protein), which Gratch says “work to reduce frizz, protect against environmental factors that could impact hair growth, repair damaged hair to stimulate growth, and promote healthier hair overall.” For those with damaged strands, it also contains plenty of hydrating lipids to soothe and smooth (say that five times fast) frizzy hair.

Color Wow

Color Security Shampoo

Why we love it: I’ve lost count of the times I’ve stepped out of the shower only to realize my shampoo didn’t rinse out properly. Thankfully, this one is specifically formulated to rinse out cleanly, leaving no residue that can weigh down hair or clog follicles, which can ultimately impede hair growth. Just a coin-size amount is all it takes for everyone to start asking you about your secret to frizz-free, shiny hair. As for the ingredients, board-certified dermatologist Pooja Rambhia notes that the formula contains caffeine and niacinamide, which some studies suggest may help increase scalp circulation. “It also includes biotin and keratin proteins that can help strengthen existing hair strands,” she says. That said, she cautions that because shampoos have limited contact time with the scalp, their effectiveness for hair regrowth is generally less than that of leave-in treatments.

Everything You Need to Know

Does hair-growth shampoo work?

According to Doshi, hair-growth shampoos may not be equally helpful for everyone, as hair loss could result from a variety of underlying factors that require different treatment strategies. The effectiveness of a hair-growth shampoo depends on the ingredients used. While the evidence for significant regrowth is limited, certain ingredients have shown promise in scientific studies, including ketoconazole, saw palmetto, biotin, and minoxidil.

“Hair loss can have various causes, and a dermatologist or hair transplant surgeon can help diagnose the underlying cause and recommend the most effective treatment options for your specific situation,” he emphasizes. Treatment approaches may include a combination of methods, such as hair-growth shampoos containing specific ingredients, medications, or surgical procedures.

Trichologist William Gaunitz explains, “Hair-growth shampoo can work under very specific circumstances; however, the vast majority of the time, shampoo is the low man on the totem pole as far as efficacy when trying to regrow hair.” It’s mainly used as support for a hair-growth serum or medications that help to address the underlying reason for the hair loss.

The reason being that shampoo itself doesn’t make much of an impact on the scalp, unless there is an inflammatory scalp condition, like seborrheic dermatitis, excessive bacteria and fungus, excessive oil, or Demodex parasites. Gaunitz adds, “If there’s an active ingredient in the shampoo that will help manage those items, it will usually improve hair growth.”

How does hair-growth shampoo work?

Per Gaunitz, hair-growth shampoo works by supporting a healthy scalp microbiome; reducing oil, fungus, bacteria, and parasites; and decreasing inflammation. Oftentimes, these shampoos will include ingredients like saw palmetto, arnica, tea tree oil, and a host of other natural anti-inflammatory or antiseptic ingredients that are beneficial for the scalp.

Keep in mind that for hair-growth shampoos to be effective, the active ingredients must penetrate the skin and enter the hair follicles. “This is why many hair-development treatments are typically left on the scalp for a specific period before rinsing for more effective absorption,” says Doshi.

What should you look for in a hair-growth shampoo?

When shopping for a hair-loss shampoo that supports healthy hair growth, experts recommend looking for formulas that focus on scalp health, help reduce hair fall, and strengthen hair strands. Gaunitz advises choosing shampoos with natural active ingredients that minimize inflammation and prevent microbial overgrowth. “Ingredients such as tea tree oil, rosemary oil, green tea extract, saw palmetto, aloe, and arnica are all fantastic ingredients to look for,” he says. He also notes that the first five ingredients typically make up 97% of the formula, so seek shampoos that avoid harsh surfactants and parabens, and instead lean into nourishing actives for cleaner, fuller hair.

Rosemary Oil: Rambhia highlights a 2015 study comparing rosemary oil to 2% minoxidil for treating androgenetic alopecia. It found that rosemary oil was just as effective in increasing hair count after six months. “The oil works by improving circulation to hair follicles and has anti-inflammatory properties that may help create a healthier scalp environment for hair growth,” she says.

Tea Tree Oil: “This ingredient has antimicrobial properties that can help maintain scalp health and may reduce inflammation that could inhibit hair growth,” says Rambhia. A shampoo with tea tree oil is a great option if you’re prone to buildup, dryness, or flaking. “A clean, healthy scalp provides the optimal environment for hair follicles to function properly,” she adds.

Green Tea Extract: Known for its potent antioxidants, green tea extract may help block DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a hormone linked to hair loss. “By potentially reducing DHT activity, green tea extract could help preserve existing hair follicles,” says Rambhia.

Saw Palmetto: Rambhia explains that this botanical may help block 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT: “Since DHT is a primary cause of androgenetic alopecia, saw palmetto could theoretically help slow hair-loss progression.” It’s commonly used in hair-loss shampoos aimed at both men and women with pattern thinning.

Biotin: “Biotin is a B vitamin essential for keratin production, which is crucial for healthy hair structure,” says Rambhia. While biotin deficiency is rare, supplementation only helps those who are actually deficient in this vitamin.

Keratin: Keratin is the protein that gives hair its strength and elasticity. “It doesn’t promote new hair growth, but it can temporarily strengthen and thicken existing hair strands,” explains Rambhia. It’s a common ingredient in strengthening shampoos that improve the look and feel of thicker hair.

Collagen: Collagen may supply amino acids needed for hair protein synthesis. However, Rambhia cautions that “the benefits for hair growth when used in shampoos are likely minimal,” since topical collagen doesn’t penetrate as deeply.

Aloe: A classic ingredient in shampoos targeting dryness and scalp irritation, aloe is beloved for its soothing, anti-inflammatory properties. According to Rambhia, “A calm, non-irritated scalp creates better conditions for optimal hair follicle function.”

What is biotin?

“Biotin, usually known as vitamin B7, is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in human metabolic processes, including energy synthesis, genetic control, and cell signaling,” says Doshi. He continues, “It is necessary for the efficient functioning of enzymes and contributes to the formation of keratin, a protein that serves as a structural component in hair, skin, and nails.” Although biotin is naturally found in many foods such as egg yolks, nuts, seeds, and vegetables, its bioavailability can vary. You can always consider taking a supplement, but the effectiveness of biotin intake for hair and nail growth is currently under investigation, and outcomes may vary among individuals.

What causes hair loss?

There are a ton of reasons why you may experience hair loss, ranging from genetic predispositions to medical conditions, stress, dietary deficiencies, and hormonal changes. Gaunitz breaks it down into three main components: genetic sensitivity, nutritional hair loss, and inflammation.

“A genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone, also known as DHT, leads to hair loss referred to as androgenetic alopecia or male and female pattern hair loss,” he explains. Nutritional hair loss occurs due to insufficient levels of vitamin D3, zinc, ferritin, folate, B12, and iron in the bloodstream. Inflammation contributes to various types of hair loss, including scarring alopecia, alopecia areata, and inflammatory scalp conditions.

What are other viable hair-loss treatments?

“While minoxidil and finasteride are frequently suggested for hair loss, medical professionals may recommend a variety of additional treatment options like low-level laser therapy for promoting growth, platelet-rich plasma therapy, which involves injecting the individual’s plasma with growth hormones, hair transplant surgery for severe cases, and unapproved drugs such as spironolactone or dutasteride for hormonal imbalances,” says Doshi. However, success varies by individual, so it’s important to consult with a medical expert to devise a personalized game plan.

How long should it take to see results from using a hair-growth shampoo?

Slow and steady wins the race, and that is especially true of hair-growth shampoos. Hamilton explains that most people start to notice small changes, like less shedding or stronger-feeling hair, within six to eight weeks of consistent use. “However, actual new growth takes longer, because hair still has to move through its natural cycle,” he says. “It is usually at least three to four months before most people see improvements in hair growth.” Consistency is key, Hamilton emphasizes. Regular use of a growth-focused shampoo makes the biggest difference, but lifestyle habits such as maintaining a nutrient-rich diet, caring for your scalp, and protecting hair from UV rays or heat styling are just as important. “All of these factors affect your hair-growth journey and the overall health of your hair,” he says.
