Broad-shouldered, double-breasted, and straight-legged suiting has been on the rise in womenswear for several years. But if Pantsuit Nation started the trend towards empowered suiting, the Fall 2019 runways offered plenty of options that reject masculine shapes in favor of feminine lines. No one does it better than Clare Waight Keller—a woman designer with women on the brain—whose curved-shoulder suits at Givenchy transformed slim blazers into a resounding display of loveliness. Some guys are in on it too, like Marco Zanini, whose artfully cinched jackets and roomy pants have quickly become the talk of the Vogue offices.
In stores this fall, there are plenty of options, from the couture-grade tailoring of Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen to Rebecca Taylor’s affordable yet still-posh lapel-less top and bottoms. They come in a wide range of colors, from blush to classic black, but a suit with a ladylike shape doesn’t mean you have to give up sneakers or boyish flourishes. Take a page from The Row’s Fall 2019 show and style a creme-color suit with a boxy turtleneck and flat, lug-soled boots. It’s the perfect way to rethink the style codes of Pantsuit Nation as we gear up for another election year.
