Sure, the striking look is cover-worthy—but who says you can’t wear a bra top on a regular Tuesday in the middle of December? As recently showcased by other stylish celebrities like Rihanna and Emily Ratajkowski, there’s something to wearing the bra year-round, whether it’s worn under a suit or your favorite puffer coat. Though it’s been a trend for a few seasons—seen on the runways at Oscar de la Renta or Alberta Ferretti last year, and famously worn by Katie Holmes in 2019—it’s only gaining momentum. For the past few months, we’ve seen stars embracing the bra top in clever ways that are even appropriate for cold weather. Ratajkowski, for instance, paired a black version with an oversized gray suit and sneakers. It perfectly subverted the blazer and made it feel a little more cool and casual. Rihanna also styled a black bra with a zip-up hoodie, mini skirt, and platform heels. You can layer one under pretty much anything, from jackets to knits, and it offers a flash of skin that’s way more visually-interesting than your standard tank or tee.
It’s also perfect for evening, and all those holiday parties on your calendar (just maybe not your office one). When Zendaya accepted her Fashion Icon Award at the CFDA Awards last month, she chose a Vera Wang bandeau and paired it with a peplum, floor-length skirt. For the premiere of Spencer in October, Kristen Stewart leaned into glamour as well, pairing a black bra top with a tiered, lace skirt. To take the look off the red carpet, consider styling your favorite velvet blazer or party skirt with a bra top. There’s even luxe, beaded or be-ribboned styles on the market, like this one by Simone Rocha, which could be layered over a crisp white shirt. If you’re apprehensive about showing that much skin, that’s the perfect styling approach. Consider it a training bra top!
