These days, when a celebrity embarks on a press tour or album rollout, it’s all very planned. They might do an episode of Hot Wings, have a Chicken Shop date, or swing by a late night talk show. There’s a certain tried-and-true Hollywood formula that A-listers (or rather, their publicists) love to follow. But sometimes, once in a magical blue moon, a star will stray from the norm—and pop up in the most random of places. Just look at Cardi B this past month: The rapper has been promoting her new album, Am I the Drama?, in the wackiest and most fabulous of ways.
Cardi’s deeply unserious album rollout all began a few weeks ago, when she was testifying in court over an altercation with a security guard. (Cardi was cleared of the charges.) Videos of the star getting questioned went so viral—thanks to her quick wit and comedic facial expressions—that Cardi turned the memes into a limited-edition Am I the Drama? vinyl. Talk about a smart marketing move. In the days that have followed, Cardi has continued to bring the gags. In New York, she popped up with her vinyls and CDs on a city sidewalk, attempting to sell them to anyone who walked by while waving around incense. “$9.99, $9.99,” she shouted. She also hustled her vinyls on the New York City subway. “I used to be a professional ballerina, but I’m trying to turn my life around for kids,” she joked.

Sure, these were all planned PR stunts, but there is something delightfully refreshing (and unhinged) about her completely rogue press tour. A few days ago, Cardi popped up on the top of a black Escalade, taking selfies for her fans while also twerking on the roof; It is unclear if this was part of the marketing plan, or simply just what Cardi felt like doing, on a Tuesday.

Even better than her impromptu appearances, meanwhile, is the epic fashion she s worn during more traditional press stops. Styled by Kollin Carter, Cardi has embraced full glamour ahead of her album drop. On Jimmy Fallon, she wore a blue feathered Libertine coat and metallic platforms. She has also sported leopard-printed coats, big faux fur jackets (one worn to the Alexander Wang show during New York Fashion Week), and striped jersey dresses.
The superstar has a big personality (please watch her sit-down interview with friend Kelly Rowland) and even bigger statement looks to match. With Am I the Drama? officially coming out tomorrow, we’re sad this press tour is coming to a close. I mean, what other musician has casually revealed they are pregnant during an album rollout? Cardi is bringing the spontaneity back to being a celebrity, and I simply live for it.
