Yes, the jet-black winged eyeliner was major, but did you see the hair bows models wore at the Chanel Metiers d’Art 2021 show in Paris on Tuesday? Consider your party season hairstyle well and truly sorted.

Midnight-black ribbons, courtesy of hairstylist Damien Boissinot and his team, were secured into models’ deep, androgynous side partings via a small (hidden) braid. Even a mention of “hair bow” conjures images of prim and proper hair, but ribbons—in classic French style—were left to fall over the face and paired with natural texture, a few flyaways, and some gentle waves. Nothing was too neat or polished—think low-maintenance hair with a chic (and easy) twist.

Perfect for evening soirées, especially during the thick of the festive period, the hair bow is an excellent ploy for making it appear like you’ve made effort, even if that’s not the case. Recreating the look simply requires a side parting and either a piece of ribbon or a hair bow clip (options below!).

The hair bow has long been a staple of Chanel’s catwalk beauty looks. A motif that was originally inspired by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, who often clipped one into her own hair, there have been many other iconic hair bow moments in the brand’s shows over the years, from Claudia Schiffer’s high ponytail in autumn/winter 1995 to Penelope Cruz’s half-up ponytail in autumn/winter 2019.
