The genesis of Chloë Sevigny is the stuff of fashion folklore: a teen model who skipped school to go thrift shopping in New York. A magazine intern who landed a cameo in a Sonic Youth music video and an entire article in the New Yorker dedicated to her It-girl status at just 19 years old. Perhaps that’s why Emma Chopova and Laura Lowena decided to cast the actor in their own speculative fairytale, where Sevigny played the Snow Queen protagonist, dressed in their fall 2023 designs.
The actor clearly loved a few of those pieces – namely an hourglass, puff-sleeved blouse with a spliced Peter Pan collar and ancient, coin-like buttons – which she had previously worn to read Chopova Lowena’s debut novella at Bergdorf Goodman. This time, for a stroll around New York, she paired it with some monogrammed knee-length shorts and loafer mules. I like to think she may be some kind of medieval tavern wench that’s been beamed into the 21st century and forced to read countless articles about “skater-chic jorts”.
That is not the basis of the ye olde Chopova Lowena tale, but it would make for a compelling narrative, perhaps with a searing and quite deft analysis of post-clickbait consumerism. “I want to give myself to you and your fantasy and whatever you want to create,” Sevigny said of becoming the brand’s fall 2023 figurehead. “I am your model, your piece of clay; mold me into whatever. I am here!”
