Chloë Sevigny Has Seen Your Memes About Her Style

We all feel the sting of embarrassment when forced to reckon with our past fashion choices—even the eternally chic Chloë Sevigny. “Let the shame and regret begin,” Sevigny jokes as she dives into her life in looks.

Sevigny may grapple with cringeworthy outfits of yore like the rest of us, but her fashion history tour begins on a rather unrelatable note—with the white bralette and diaphanous brown skirt she wore to walk in the Miu Miu spring 1996 show. “All I knew was that I was way out of my league,” she says. “I was terrified.” Even though the actor hit the runway in barely more than her skivvies, Sevigny looks back on the show with a sense of innocence. “I never thought about ‘sex sells,’” she says. “Like it wasn’t something I was even trying to do in pictures, and I think that s so pervasive now.”

Also very pervasive these days? Bold fashion choices of yesteryear becoming internet fodder. “I’ve seen many memes around this dress,” she says of the cutout-heavy Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton look she wore to the Viva Glam Casino in 2004. “I would just hope and pray that I fit into things,” she recalls of her early career days without a stylist. “It’s a lot of boob,” she admits.

Sevigny’s singular style transcends runways and red carpets. In a shot from 2010, she wore “this cute number over here”: a Cramps graphic tee with vintage Levi’s skinny jeans held up by a pair of black suspenders, and a sample pair of Chanel clogs. “Suspenders—did I need to be wearing them? Probably not,” she says. “I think I had a tendency to over-accessorize because I found myself not very interesting just on my own so I would pile stuff on.”

No look back would be complete without Sevigny’s heavily Pinterested 2022 wedding to Siniša Mačković. “[The reception] was held at a park where I had done a lot of acid as a teenager,” she says. Sevigny wore three different looks for the celebration: a couture dress by Glenn Martens for Jean Paul Gaultier, a Loewe minidress, and a white pants set by Casey Cadwallader for Mugler. “Why, I don’t know—I feel like I spent half the wedding changing.”

Watch as Chloë Sevigny explores her life in looks, from her tiger print tights to her very first Vogue shoot with Annie Leibovitz.
