On Thursday, Disney lit up the Internet when it announced the release dates for two upcoming Star Wars movies and a sequel to 2013’s animated juggernaut, Frozen.
But it was the company s third bulletin that deserves additional fanfare. CEO Bob Iger announced that Disney is banning smoking from all films rated PG-13 and under.
“We are extending our policy to prohibit smoking in movies across the board: Marvel, Lucas, Pixar, and Disney films,” Iger said, adding that the only exception would be the depiction of a historical figure who was a known smoker.
As groundbreaking as the company s initiative may be, Robin Williams had been heralding the cause 21 years earlier. In the opening scene of Mrs. Doubtfire, Williams s character famously protested the use of smoking in children s cartoons. Take a look at the adorably prescient clip below.
