What exactly is a Sicilian Western? Let Dolce Gabbana’s Fall 2016 men’s show explain. The collection mixed staples of Italian tailoring with flourishes co-opted from the American West. In Oscar-terms, it was sort of a Tarantino-meets-The Revenant mash-up of camp and drama. Here, 10 things you need to know about the show.
1. The set was made to look like a desert landscape with cacti of all sizes and agave plants, plus the modern addition of a Steadicam rig.
2. The first look out was a furry poncho of bearlike proportions, paired with slim pants and lace-up boots.
3. The cozy shearling continued onto pants. Comfortable? Definitely, but maybe not so easy to walk in.
4. Male models carried iPads shooting video that was projected on screens within the show venue and sent out on Dolce Gabbana’s social channels.
5. Even the models’ iPads had gotten in a Western mood, courtesy of cowboy and cacti stickers.
6. Desert inspirations came on classically tailored suiting in the form of beaded embellishment.
7. Leather jackets and denim pieces also got the Western-embellishment treatment.
8. For cowboys in need of some R&R, Dolce Gabbana sent out many silk separates in Western-inspired prints like wagon wheels, lassos, and horses.
9. Forget logo prints. Dolce Gabbana took the logomania trend to the next level with several sweaters and sweatshirts featuring an illustrated portrait of the designers and their dogs on the front.
10. Even in D&G s men’s show, the idea of la mamma is always present. In this case, it arrived in the form of Stefano Gabbana’s actual mamma, who sat front row decked out in Dolce Gabbana.
