As readers of this site know, mini bags are having a moment. The latest It girl–anointed accessories are, of course, cute and adorable. But they are small—maybe roomy enough for half an iPhone or a roll of pennies. Yet, as it turns out, there is a way to carry a micro purse and still be a functioning adult in the real world: carrying two bags. The look was first seen in the rise of net bags, those stretchy string sacks called filets in France and avoskas in Russia. Their holey quality means they’re useful only as backup to another bag—and so far, Vetements, Hillier Bartley, and a slew of street style stars have used the format as a lowbrow-looking counterpoint to quad-digit-priced It purses. According to Vogue Market Editor Anny Choi, the humble original works just fine for this purpose. “Why spend money on a designer net bag,” she says, “when you can buy one for $10 and put your purse in it?”
Another version of the two-bag trend is the clear plastic bag. This past season, some showgoers carried a $500 Céline PVC tote for the sole purpose of carrying another bag. The tongue-in-cheek concept is right in line with luxury’s current anti-luxury mood. “I personally love the irony of a Burberry clutch in a Céline-logo plastic bag,” says Choi. “It makes you stop and think for a second.” And while the idea can also be mimicked with cheaper versions, bear in mind: The contents are on display to the world, so, well, keep it clean.
