At tonight s Grammy Awards, you may have noticed the red carpet was distinctly lacking Album of the Year nominee Lorde. But though she may have skipped the preamble, she made a splash soon after with a striking red lip that rendered the carpet wholly unnecessary. Lorde—nominated for Melodrama—was spotted amid the crowd with her trademark tousled brunette waves supplemented by luminous skin, lengthy lashes, and a vivid crimson lip that played off her tulle dress (and a well-chosen red flask).
The moment was a bold one all on its own, but made more memorable by her choice to forgo the pre-event niceties. The pop star had good reason: Though white roses may have adorned a slew of lapels in support of Time s Up, Lorde was not only the sole female nominated in the coveted category, but she was also the only nominee who reportedly was not offered a solo performance spot. In welcome rebellion, she skipped out on the parade—and the option of partaking in a Tom Petty tribute—in favor of a showed-up-like-this look replete with an ever-empowering beauty staple. Whether or not Lorde takes home the gilded gramophone, her rule-bending beauty is the evening s ultimate win.
