As the jury president at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Greta Gerwig will be making many red carpet appearances throughout the week. Case in point: Only a few days into the festival, and the director has already delivered a handful of striking fashion moments—all with the assist of her stylist, Karla Welch. Together, the duo have leaned into embracing statement style, choosing looks that are designed to turn heads and make an impact. Welch tells Vogue, “She’s the [jury] president, so we can either follow some sort of rules, or just do what we want—and we’re sort of doing both!”

Gerwig’s Cannes style has put emphasis on reinterpreting classic glitz and glamour. Last night, for the Furiosa after-party, Gerwig wore a sheer, nude-colored gown with crystal fringe, designed for Jean Paul Gaultier by Simone Rocha. The whimsical frock was a fresh (and fresh-off-the-runway) take on an evening gown. “I was at the Simone show, and I just love how special all her shows are,” says Welch. “We were super honored to get to wear a piece.”

Gerwig’s day looks have been equally as elegant. At the Furiosa premiere, she slipped into a red Armani Privé gown with a plunging neckline; For the festival’s opening ceremony, she donned a sequined Saint Laurent number, the silhouette featuring long sleeves and a high slit.

Even her more casual choices have shined. Her first look for Cannes—a Carven design—was a brown sleeveless dress with a structured upper bodice. Gerwig also wore a striped Margiela day dress that featured a cinched waist, and paired it with white Tabi heels—the perfect shoes to subvert Cannes’s archaic traditional-stilettos-only rule. (Why wear plain pumps when you can wear hooves-like heels?)

Tonight, meanwhile, Gerwig returned to sparkles with a custom black cape dress by Chanel, fully embroidered with sequins; It was inspired by a look from the house s spring 2024 couture collection, which she accessorized with Chanel High Jewelry, naturally.

Clearly, Gerwig isn’t playing around this Cannes—and we’ve still got many days to go until the festival is over. It may be too early to call it, but Gerwig is already emerging as one of this year’s best-dressed.
