If the Noughties had Kabbalah, then 2023 has something called Churchome: a nondenominational network of US-based churches attended by celebrities like Selena Gomez and the Kardashians. Its website – all sans serif fonts and livestreamed sermons – looks and feels like a millenial tech start-up, complete with a virtual confessional booth referred to as “Pastor Chat”. “Start a conversation today!”
Among Churchome’s twinkling congregation is husband and wife Justin and Hailey Bieber, who credit the success of their marriage to a shared sense of faith. Last night, the couple visited Churchome’s Beverly Hills outpost in a contemporary interpretation of the term “Sunday best”: Justin in frayed jeans and padded sliders, Hailey in an oversized sweater and knife-point stiletto boots.
In doing so, Mrs Bieber tasked herself with answering one of the internet’s most debated questions: How does one serve [insert expletive here] in a God-honoring way? The solution, it would seem, is to go pantless in the pews. Because to dress well is a moral – and perhaps spiritual – obligation. It is to live life with intention, to put your best foot forward, and to show reverence to something greater than yourself.
