As soon as the clock struck 8 p.m., the official close of the 2020 Golden Globe Awards, guests moved single-file out of the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the locale chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for the inaugural awards in 1955 and every year since. Nominees, winners, and spectators exited the room, minding the wake of ball-gown trains, and some carried topped-off Moët Champagne flutes for the road.
Outside, they were greeted with a sign pointing out all of their after-party options with directional arrows. On-site at the behemoth hotel property were no fewer than seven events—that’s one way to beat the L.A. traffic! Listed were the parties of Disney/Hulu, Amazon Studios, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, NBCUniversal, Warner Brothers/InStyle, Netflix, and HBO. It was a where’s where for a who’s who of Hollywood that night. (Elsewhere, at the Sunset Tower, the press-free CAA after-party would unfold.)
Since the Globes is a boozy bash in and of itself, it’s not so surprising the after-parties follow suit. Brad Pitt took a break from his nights in and headed to Netflix before CAA, while Zoë Kravitz seemed to make the rounds, turning up just about everywhere in her Saint Laurent. Roman Griffin Davis was most assuredly up past his bedtime (although he did attend the Disney party), and the cast of Succession held court at HBO. The best moments, captured here.
With Tiffany Haddish Playing Unofficial Hostess, the Netflix After-Party Was Undoubtedly the Place to Be Last Night
Guests had to retrace the steps they made down the red carpet earlier in the night to find the Netflix after-party, which lured the biggest names from the Globes—many toting their newly awarded statuettes—and made a turn about the party feel like entering the winner’s circle. The streaming service seemed to think of everything; in addition to a glam station complete with make-up artists at the ready for touch-ups, there was a “shoe valet” giving women a reprieve from their stilettos in exchange for comfy flats. Notably, Brad Pitt turned up, as did Pharrell (who was not at the award ceremony). Laura Dern and her bouncy waves flitted across the room and the soon-to-be-married Scarlett Johansson swapped her crimson Vera Wang gown for a feathery minidress that resembled the white swan ensemble of Billy Porter, with whom she caught up over passed bites. Eventually, Tiffany Haddish commandeered the microphone alongside Snoop Dogg for a performance. She requested that everyone get themselves to the dance floor—and her wish was their command.
Hailey Bieber Made a Surprise Appearance at the InStyle and Warner Bros. Fête
The mark of an after-party’s success is when it draws A-listers who weren’t even at the main event—like Hailey Bieber at last night’s event, understated in a shimmery black mini. Zoë Kravitz cozied up with her glamorous mother, Lisa Bonet, and her Big Little Lies costar Shailene Woodley, while Globes nominee Sacha Baron Cohen appeared deep in conversation with the well-accessorized Jason Momoa. Joaquin Phoenix, still coming down from his big win, spent the night beside Joker director Todd Phillips. Awkwafina—the first winner of Asian descent in the category of best actress in a comedy or musical—summoned her castmates from The Farewell to the dance floor. And, because this is Los Angeles, Paris Hilton turned up a see-through glittering gown and proceeded to drop it like it’s hot with Jasmine Sanders.
Succession and Game of Thrones Cast Members Intermingled at the HBO After-Party
It was a family affair at the HBO after-party. Cousin Greg was there, as was Roman, Shiv, Kendall, Connor, and Mr. Logan Roy—or rather the actors who portray them. They all perform so superbly it’s hard to divorce them from their onscreen personas in Succession. This was a slightly lower-key affair but one not without its own fair share of gilt-globe statuettes. There were two for the NYC-based show (best actor in a television series, drama, for Brian Cox, and best television series, drama), and two more for the can’t-believe-that’s-actually-how-it-went-down historical drama Chernobyl. And with Ansel Elgort’s shimmery eyeshadow catching the light, the starry room was only that much more luminous.
All the Cool Kids Came Out to the Disney Company’s Event
With Disney as a cohost alongside Hulu, it makes sense that this was an after-party with a PG-13 rating. Yara Shahidi seemed to pay homage to the L.A. sunshine with a marigold minidress and Roman Griffin Davis proved his wee frame was no hindrance on the dance floor. Patricia Arquette was there in a plastic Viking hat (which she sported to several after-parties) hoisting up her hard-won Golden Globe Award. To the victor goes the spoils!
Phoebe Waller-Bridge Danced With Her Hot Priest at the Amazon After-Party
As photos were limited to the red carpet at the Amazon event, the real fun was left undocumented. But attendees would see the ebullient cast of Fleabag be among the first to arrive and the first to start dancing. Phoebe Waller-Bridge came strutting into “Brick House” by the Commodores and was soon joined by internet heartthrob Andrew Scott. Wild cards Orlando Bloom and Jon Hamm later joined the event, making the night that much more of a feast for the eyes.
