The Grammys red carpet is always a place for celebrities to deliver bold fashion statements. Over the years, wild outfits have dominated the event’s step and repeat—including that J.Lo Versace dress, and Lady Gaga showing up in an egg. (Iconic.) Indeed, the Grammys are a fun fashion spectacle—if not slightly unhinged. This year’s ceremony is certainly no different: Tonight, Jaden Smith walked the red carpet wearing a slick black Louis Vuitton suit, shirt, and tie, and completed the look with . . . a giant castle balancing on his head?
It certainly made for one of the boldest accessory choices of the night. (Though, can we even call it an accessory?) The spooky black castle—which is giving serious Nosferatu vibes—did function as a wearable chapeau, featuring a handy little face cutout for easy viewing. It was custom-made by the brand Abodi, which prides itself on creating designs inspired by Transylvanian history.
The bigger question, however, was: Why? Was there a hidden meaning behind the wearable art piece? Was he simply referencing and recreating an iconic Willem Dafoe GQ image? Fashion spectators are divided on the look. “You are not a vibe bro,” wrote one commentator of the look.
But this is the Grammys: Perhaps there is no reason for the palatial hat at all, other than the sheer joy of turning heads and making a headline. That is what the Grammys red carpet is all about. And you have to give props to a star who is willing to take a risk. Smith has been taking this approach for years, after all. Remember when he carried his own hair at the Met Gala? A castle hat is just regular Sunday business for him!
