Allow Dress Code to demystify and debunk what to wear when and where, and how to wear it, as advised by those whose innate style never fails to inspire and influence.

Whether she’s in SoHo or Beverly Hills, you won’t catch Jennifer Fisher off guard. After two decades at the helm of her namesake jewelry line—which crystallized her nickname ‘The Queen of Hoops’—Fisher has honed in on an approach to personal style that’s as sleek, polished, and versatile as her offering. With a demanding calendar, it comes down to pieces like form-fitting turtlenecks, jet black cashmere, and block color maxi dresses that do the heavy lifting day in, day out—zhuzhed up with her go-to accessories. As for the opening night of her brand new boutique on North Beverly Drive, it was time to up the ante a little, with a sculptural cloud-white gown and her omnipresent stacked heel boots. Here’s how she ensures her place on the proverbial list of best-dressed American designers.

What s your process for getting dressed? Do you make an effort even when you don t have to see anyone?

Yes, I always make an effort. You never know who you’re going to run into—and I live by that rule. I never walk around in sweats.

When you want to feel confident—what boxes does your outfit need to tick?

My look has to feel effortless, timeless, and clean. My jewelry is my armor—it’s protection. The moment I put it on, I feel stronger and more confident. That idea really inspired my semi-precious cord collection of clear, rose, and smoky quartz necklaces, which are meant to be layered and feel easy. With my California roots and love of collecting crystals, I wanted to express spirituality without being literal.

A breakfast event pops up for tomorrow. What’s a failsafe outfit you for an early morning?

A thin black cashmere turtleneck, a belt by The Row, and dark high-waisted denim never fail me. You’ll almost never see me in flats—I’m always in a Saint Laurent stacked boot or some kind of
elevated shoe.

What type of dress code fills you with dread? And what’s your workaround for that?

Costume parties. I try to interpret them in a way that still feels like me—something shimmery,
maxi, and tonal. Then I add an accessory that subtly nods to the theme.

A luncheon is on the calendar. How might you approach putting together a look for that?

I dress up a bit more for lunch. I’ll usually wear a simple black oversized suit with a crisp,
tailored men’s button-down. I’m rarely the girl in a tea dress; I like to opt for a more masculine look. So, suiting over dresses, unless it’s a very formal event. I love layering heavier gold charm
necklaces under tailoring, and stacking our floating diamond huggies up my ear. I never wear a big statement earring with a necklace—it’s either one or the other.

The 5 p.m. slump has hit, but a dinner party is on the cards. What will energize you when shifting from day to night?

I’m always prepared. I keep a dedicated drawer in my office stocked with face refreshments,
breath mints, and other essentials, plus a clothing rack with extra shoes and looks in case I can’t
run home. I also have my own coffee machine, so I’ll usually make a JF-approved latte, typically
around 3 p.m., to get me through.

You’ve no time to think about what to wear for an after-work gathering but you want to
feel chic: What formula always works for you in a bind?

Some version of a black turtleneck, black trouser, and black heels. That formula never fails me.
I’m always reaching for my favorite Sold Out cashmere turtlenecks and rotating between my
collection of Saint Laurent, Céline by Phoebe Philo, and Bettter trousers. When it comes to jewelry, I love stacking, especially rings and ear cuffs. Right now, I’m wearing rings from the Dylan and Murphy collections. Ear cuffs are always great for nighttime too since my hair usually covers my ears anyway, and they’re an easy way to elevate a look.

What’s a failsafe cocktail hour-ready outfit you tend to rinse and repeat?

I love to let my jewelry be the center of attention. I’ll add a statement earring, stack some rings and cuffs, and keep everything else clean. Sculptural pieces instantly spark a great conversation at any party.

What about black tie? Do you like to take risks, or play it pretty safe?

These days, I take risks. I’ve been embracing color and more maximalist shapes. For my Beverly
Hills store opening, I chose a white Maticevski dress as a nod to our LA rebirth—white felt
symbolic of new beginnings and a blank slate. The dress had angular shapes and volume but
remained pure and pristine. I added my signature black accents with Wolford tights and Saint Laurent platform boots. I did my own hair and makeup to keep it simple for a more laid-back California look, and for jewelry, I chose our Lab Diamond Anniversary rings to celebrate the milestone.

What after-dark pieces get the most wear in your wardrobe, year after year?

My small The Row bags. I’ve also been leaning more into a feminine approach at night—I’m
constantly reaching for my new Temily for Moda Operandi Theatre for Dreamers gown. It’s sheer, voluminous, flattering, and easy to layer or wear on its own. I know I’ll continue to keep rewearing it.

Do you have a favorite party-ready piece or accessory that always inspires conversation with strangers?

My personalized 18k pave white diamond gothic letter Fisher Cuffs. Everyone is always asking
me what the initials stand for and the meaning behind them.

What’s always in your evening bag?

My scent, Jennifer Fisher salt, touch-up powder, clear gloss, nude lipliner, breath spray, extra
rings or an ear cuff, my crystal pouch, an AirTag, Prada lip balm, cash and cards, a phone charger,
and a Crown Affair mini hairbrush.
