When it comes to Halloween, you’re either the fully committed type (think Kim Kardashian as an albino alligator, Heidi Klum as a worm), or you lean more low-key, for what I like to call the Mean Girls approach: black cat ears, devil horns, or something similar you grabbed at the last minute en route to the party. Hey, sometimes you don’t have 12 hours and a 12-person glam squad to transform you into a lifelike exotic bird. (Looking at you again, Heidi). Sometimes, the real ones know, you’ve got to work with what you’ve got—and a small nod to the occasion beats nothing at all.

Proving that sometimes less really is more, Jennifer Lawrence applied her usual understated approach to spooky season, pairing a fancy-dress favorite—a pointy witch’s hat—with a more familiar fashion staple: a leopard-print coat. It’s the second time she’s stepped out in La Ligne’s Caro style in the space of a week, a major brand in Lawrence’s wardrobe and a New York it-girl staple. As we know, animal print is a neutral, and Jennifer Lawrence has once again shown us that a little leopard can go a long way—especially when paired with the right accessories.

After having her second child earlier this year, Lawrence’s return to the spotlight has been marked by a string of Pinterestable street-style moments, all built around her tried-and-tested favorites: straight-leg jeans, beaten-up Birkins, and cashmere coats from The Row. That’s not to say there haven’t been a few runway-fresh moments (unfortunately, we can’t all get our hands on Jonathan Anderson’s Dior), but this The Leopard, the Witch and the Wardrobe situation feels true to her laid-back style philosophy—as well as a friendly reminder that sometimes, the $5 convenience store accessory really is all you need to be the best-dressed trick or treater on the block.
