This year, we’ve witnessed an abundance of maximalist fashion trends on the runways, from lace-trimmed nightgowns and exaggerated peplum coats to “ugly” shoes. Yet, one of the most notable styling tricks that has effortlessly transitioned to the streets is the use of a bold red accent.

It’s as straightforward as it sounds: add a pop of red to your outfit–be it a casually draped sweater over the shoulders or a pair of luxurious cashmere socks–and look as fashion-forward as Jennifer Lawrence. At the premiere of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’s Broadway production Appropriate, the Hollywood star wore a striking ensemble with a vibrant jolt of red. Her look, crafted by her friends Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen at The Row, featured a black maxi camisole dress in double silk satin with a relaxed V-neck and was complemented by black patent leather Lana pumps. But the standout piece was an oversized collarless scarlet coat made from the finest double-faced cashmere.

There’s nothing quite so festive as sporting a bold red hue, especially when it takes centre stage. While J-Law’s coat comes with a hefty price tag of $9,990, alternative options from brands like Toteme, Khaite and Proenza Schouler–as well as more affordable choices at high-street retailers such as Cos, Arket and Mango–can offer equally chic and impactful alternatives.
