“I think the ’80s are always great,” says Julia Cumming, the musician and model whose band, Sunflower Bean, debuted the video for their track “Come On” yesterday. In it, Cumming sports a micro minidress with pale pink trim, white go-go boots, and a thin floral scarf tied around her neck. (She also wears a kimono off her shoulders for much of the video.) On the whole, the outfit is thoroughly ’80s inspired—and coupled with Cumming’s thick Siouxsie Sioux–style eyeliner and peroxide-blonde pixie cut, the look would be at home in the early days of MTV.
“I got the dress on tour in, maybe, Atlanta? Somewhere in the South. It made me feel very glamorous and it was a splurge,” says Cumming, before admitting that the frock wasn’t entirely suited to her bass playing moves. “During the shooting of the video, I ripped it completely up the back. It was not meant for rocking and rolling.” Even so, we’d totally vouch for the dress’s appeal; after all, the ’80s are having a moment on the runways—see: Isabel Marant’s poufed shoulders, Kenzo’s techno zebra prints, and the kaleidoscope of sequins Central Saint Martins grad Michael Halpern sent out for Fall—prompting women everywhere to try out ruched minis and stirrup pants all over again.
In fact, it’s arguably ’90s babies like Cumming who are embracing the retro styles with the most gusto and flair right now. It doesn’t hurt that the 20-year-old has some impressive modeling credits, too—Saint Laurent and Schiaparelli to name a few. “The boots are Schiaparelli!” says Cumming. “I wore them in the couture show I walked for them in January!” The new video certainly gives us all a cool reason to follow in those ’80s rock star–style footsteps.
