When, this past weekend, Hailey Bieber celebrated her 29th birthday with her husband—a little-known musical artist by the name of Justin Bieber—by her side, the sight of the happy couple (well, their clasped hands and socked feet, anyway) got us thinking about the long and winding road of their relationship.
Oh, you too? Well, how about a timeline of Justin and Hailey Biebers’ courtship and marriage, then? Without further ado…:
October 2009: They meet
Not every girl can say she met her internationally famous husband in the lobby of The Today Show, but that’s exactly where Justin and Hailey Bieber first made each other’s acquaintance, back when he was a swoopy-haired teen pop idol. Hailey’s father, actor Stephen Baldwin, introduced the two of them—an adorably awkward moment captured on video.
January 2016: They soft-launch their romance with an Instagram-worthy kiss
Years later, Hailey and Justin reconnected through Hillsong Church, but they didn’t hard-launch their relationship until after photos were published of the couple sharing a kiss at Leonardo DiCaprio’s New Year’s Eve party in St. Barts.
February 2016: They share their love with the press
Justin referred to Hailey as “someone I really love” in his March 2016 GQ cover story, adding: “We spend a lot of time together.” Asked about Justin’s comments, however, Hailey clarified to E! News that the two were not exclusive. Intrigue!
Winter 2016: They split up
The course of true love famously never runs smooth, and indeed, Justin and Hailey ended Round One of their relationship almost a decade ago, not long after the GQ story came out. “I just was honest with her, I was like, ‘I’m not in a place to be faithful,’ and all this sort of stuff that I wanted to be but I just wasn’t there yet,” Justin recalled of their highly publicized breakup on the premiere episode of his and Hailey’s 2020 Facebook show, The Biebers on Watch.
Spring 2018: They get back together
After two years that Hailey described as “a long period of time when we weren’t friends,” Justin and Hailey were once again spotted attending church together and making out all over the place, from New York to Washington, D.C.
July 2018: They get engaged
Justin confirmed the rumors of his Bahamas engagement to Hailey on Instagram, captioning a cuddly photo of the couple thusly: “You are the love of my life Hailey Baldwin and I wouldn’t want to spend it with anybody else. You make me so much better and we compliment eachother [sic] so well. It’s funny because now with you everything seems to make sense!”
Fall 2018: They’re (quietly) married!
Justin and Hailey officially became the Biebers in September 2018, at small civil ceremony in New York, with Justin first referring to Hailey as his wife on social media a few months later.
March 2019: They grace the cover of Vogue
The Biebers’ first joint Vogue cover was shot by none other than Annie Leibovitz, and the accompanying story shed plenty of light on the ups and downs of the couple’s relationship. “You don’t wake up every day saying, ‘I’m absolutely so in love and you are perfect.’ That’s not what being married is,” Hailey told writer Rob Haskell. “But there’s something beautiful about it anyway—about wanting to fight for something, commit to building with someone. We’re really young, and that’s a scary aspect. We’re going to change a lot. But we’re committed to growing together and supporting each other in those changes. That’s how I look at it. At the end of the day, too, he’s my best friend. I never get sick of him.” Aww!
September 2019: It’s time for Wedding 2!
If you’re going to do a charmingly tiny courthouse thing for your first wedding, you kind of have to blow it out for the second one. That’s exactly what the Biebers did at the Inn at Palmetto Bluff near downtown Savannah, Georgia—for which the bride wore custom Off-White by Virgil Abloh, natch.
May 2024: They announce Hailey’s pregnancy
When Hailey shared on Instagram (where else?) that she and Justin had renewed their vows, the post doubled as a pregnancy announcement, with Hailey shown wearing a sheer Saint Laurent lace dress that showed off her belly.
August 2024: They become parents
Instagram was, once again, the venue of choice for the Biebers to announce that their firstborn son had officially joined the party. “Welcome Home Jack Blues Bieber,” Justin captioned an image that featured Hailey’s signature manicured nails gently grasping baby Jack’s foot.
May 2025: Hailey opens up about parenthood with Justin in her first solo Vogue cover story
After sharing details about her difficult labor with Jack, Hailey described a happy existence at home with her young family, telling Alessandra Codinha, “I’m walking in the days I always dreamed of.” Sweet!
