A string quartet, Moët Chandon and dumplings, beatboxers and break dancers, and a live performance of “Express Yourself” with dancing models in colorful zebra print—Humberto Leon and Carol Lim’s Kenzo x H&M show at Pier 36 last night was a fashion performance like no other.
“I was crying of joy!” said Soko, whose best friend, Sam Spiegel, produced the soundtrack for the show. “I thought that was the most amazing way to mix diversity and so much culture. I loved everything about the music. A sax section. Horns section. Fucking beatbox. Everything put together and all the choreography by Ryan Heffington. That was insane. That was like being completely dropped in a different world. I’m so stoked. And I’m so proud.”
Soko’s energy was far from an anomaly. Looking around the room after the show, one could see Halsey dancing on one end, Chloë Sevigny chatting with Chance the Rapper, and Sienna Miller taking in the looks with Spike Jonze, all with enthusiasm. Joe Jonas stood on the stage as Ice Cube took the mic.
“Carol and Humberto have always been so inclusive and now it’s so exciting for them to have a collaboration with H&M, which is such an accessible brand,” mused Leigh Lezark as the party picked up. “This whole thing is just really great. Everyone is very blown away.”
