Guests trekked out to the Fondation Louis Vuitton in the rain-soaked Bois de Boulogne today to see Nicolas Ghesquière’s Fall 2016 runway show for Louis Vuitton. Inside a specially designed space they found an ice blue–lit runway and some of the week’s biggest stars. As for the clothes, they mixed a sporty spirit with expert tailoring. Here, nine things you need to know about Louis Vuitton’s Fall collection—check Vogue Runway later for Nicole Phelps’s full review.
1. Alicia Vikander, Catherine Deneuve, Jennifer Connelly, Selena Gomez, Jaden Smith, Zendaya, and Léa Seydoux were some of the stars in Vuitton’s front row.
2. Natalie Westling opened the show wearing a leather coat with gold riveting, red leather pants, and black combat boots.
3. A scarf dress trend emerged, with prints ranging from the more classic rope and chains to jewel-hued romantic florals.
4. Many of the looks were grounded with lug-soled flat boots or mid-heeled booties in black.
5. A sport theme ran throughout the collection, best seen in a series of color-blocked knits, the best one in kelly green and cobalt layered over a kicky skirt.
6. The exaggerated hip continued to gain traction, appearing on the Vuitton runway in the form of zip-front vests and jackets.
7. What of the bags? There were leopard-print backpacks, pale gray oversize weekenders, oil slick mini trunks, and a new miniature bag shape with a central buckle.
8. Many of Ghesquière’s favorite models appeared on the runway today, including the rose-haired Fernanda Ly, Liya Kebede, and Mae Lapres, all sporting deep berry lips by Pat McGrath.
9. The show ended on a series of trompe l’oeil sequined dresses meant to look printed over white slips, echoing a famous Martin Margiela design.
