New York Mayor Eric Adams continued the long and storied tradition of making political statements at the Met Gala on Monday night, walking the red carpet in a waistcoat emblazoned with the phrase “End Gun Violence” on the back.
While arm-in-arm with partner Tracey Collins, Mayor Adams called attention to the rise of shootings in his city, particularly in the wake of last month’s Brooklyn subway shooting that left 10 people wounded.
For politicians, gracing the Met Gala carpet can be a complicated, criticism-stoking endeavor (just ask Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, wearer of last year’s “Tax the Rich” gown by Brother Vellies). Adams’s office explained his attendance to The New York Times on Monday, saying: “While he will celebrate American fashion, he also recognizes the fraught history of the Gilded Age.”
Earlier on Monday, Mayor Adams shared a bit of his pre-Met prep, thanking the city nail technicians who gave him a pedicure.
