Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Make a Royal Cameo at Sundance

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made a surprise appearance yesterday at Sundance Film Festival, attending the premiere of Cookie Queens, the new documentary on which they have served as executive producers. And while the Sundance red carpet in snow-peaked Park City has become a surprise source of subversive winter fashion and cozy but cool looks, the royals opted to have a more muted, monochromatic, matching couples style moment.

Meghan and Harry took photos with the documentary’s director Alysa Nahmias and festival director Eugene Hernandez, as well as Sundance’s Amy Redford. Meghan also took a moment to meet the girls featured in the doc.

Cookie Queens is set during Girl Scout Cookie season, following four “tenacious girls”—Ara, Olive, Nikki and Shannon Elizabeth—as they battle to be the top-selling “Cookie Queen.” Sundance programmer Stephanie Owens called it a “sparkling film” that shows us the girls’s “charm and unsuspecting sharp business tactics.” “Think future Supreme Court justices, CEOs and beyond,” she said—a sentiment that reflects the Duchess of Sussex’s own values and advocacy for young girls and women’s empowerment. Meghan and Harry act as exec producers under their Archewell Productions banner.

Their appearance maybe wasn’t that much of a surprise given their front-facing credits for the film, but the couple dressed decidedly low-key. Prince Harry opted for his favorite form of practical outerwear and sported a black zip-up sleeveless gilet with a longsleeve black cotton shirt and dark-wash jeans. In a sleek and pared back look in keeping with the Meghan Markle school of style, the Duchess opted for a chocolate brown, collarless Anine Bing wrap coat that tied at the waist, a simple black knit sweater, and black flared skinny jeans from Veronica Beard. She wore her hair glossy and straight in a middle part.

Just this week, Prince Harry was back in the UK where he took to the witness stand to give his testimony against the publisher of British tabloid the Daily Mail. His voice broken when he detailed the “horrible experience” for his family (Associated Newspapers Limited, he said, “have made my wife’s life an absolute misery”), and that all he wanted was “an apology and some accountability.”

Now back in the U.S., the royal couples’s moment at Sundance Film Festival added some welcome lightness to life. Question: did they stick around for Charli xcx’s The Moment?
