While Beyoncé was busy on the Cowboy Carter tour, her mother, Tina Knowles, was on a tour of her own last night in Washington, D.C. She celebrated her new memoir, Matriarch, at the Theater at MGM National Harbor, with an event hosted by none other than former First Lady Michelle Obama.
We’re curious if the two matriarchs texted ahead of Wednesday night’s conversation, seeing as they both got the memo on the dress code: black and sparkly. Knowles, for her part, wore an asymmetrical Tony Ward dress—half drapey and black, half a strong-shouldered rhinestoned long-sleeve—along with a pair of sheer black gloves. She played up the sparkle with a pair of oversized earrings.
Obama, meanwhile, kept it more classic in a black satin double-breasted McQueen suit with sharp shoulders that matched her crisp lapels. But she added some pizzazz to the suiting with her accessories: a handful of rings and Yvonne Léon disco ball earrings. (We also couldn’t help but notice her bright green nails: Brat summer continues on.)
While Tina Knowles and Michelle Obama took different approaches to their black and silver looks last night, we can all agree that it was a real meeting of the mothers.
